NMMC’s Fruits, Plants & Vegetable Expo to support social initiative SEED
By Dinesh Kamath

(Above) Plants, Vegetables and flowers at the last year exhibition.
In a continuous bid to spread awareness in the city and across the country through various initiatives, the HEART Foundation (HF) has joined hands with the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) to be a part of the 8th Fruits, Plants, Vegetables & Flower Exhibition from 7th to 9th February 2014 at Wonders Park, Nerul, Navi Mumbai through their Social Initiative called Sow a “SEED” (Save Earth from Eternal Damage).
Mr. Chandrakant Tayade, Dy. Manager, NMMC, said, “The entry to the above exhibition is absolutely free for all the three days. It will have various fun filled activities like painting, Photography, Rangoli, etc and will have various lectures of how to have a roof or kitchen garden to name a few. There would be awards for best entries too. There will be spot painting on Environment for different ages, fruit carvings, Rangoli with Petals and many more exciting programs. The children would get to see varieties of Fruits, Plants, and Vegetables & Flowers which cannot be seen on a regular basis. I am also glad that we have joined hands to support the social initiative of SEED by the Heart Foundation.”
“The HEART (Helping to Educate Associate Rehabilitate & Teach) Foundation has always joined hands to bring about a change in the society through various initiatives on different issues one recently being on signing of the PACT (Prevention of Abuse of Child & Teens) with the Maharashtra Police and with few of the Bollywood Actors which has had over thousands registered for the same,” said Dr. Jayakar Ellis, President of the foundation.
“Through the SEED initiative we want to put across to every child the seriousness of not only planting trees but also being more Eco-friendly which literally means being earth-friendly or not harmful to the environment. You can engage in eco-friendly habits or practices by being more conscious of how you use resources. Global warming is another serious issue and refers to an increase in the average temperature of the Earth as a result of the greenhouse effect, in which gases in the upper atmosphere trap solar radiation close to the planet's surface instead of allowing it to dissipate into space. We would promote planting of seeds, reduce waste and conserve water etc through our on going seminars in Schools and Colleges in the future,” he added.

On the 9th from 5:30 pm there will be a musical evening with dance, songs and many entertaining items with regard to the exhibition. For further details, and to book the slots for lectures, please call on +91 8080007777.

Dinesh Kamath’s news ‘Who stole Sunny Leone’s lingerie?’

Who stole Sunny Leone’s lingerie?

Sunny Leone was shooting for the film ‘Ragini MMS 2’ which has a mix of horror and sex sequences. Sunny was required to wear seductive lingerie. But, during the shoot of the film, it was found that the grey coloured lingerie which Sunny was supposed to wear for an important scene had gone missing. Now, Sunny is very particular about the lingerie brand she wears and hence the makers of the film had a tough time in fetching for her the same type of product. Somehow they managed to get their hands at the type of lingerie Sunny preferred to wear and the shooting resumed and Sunny got into her garb without further hassle. The question is: ‘Who stole Sunny’s lingerie and why?

Dinesh Kamath's Editorial 'Central Government and not Kejriwal is at fault' that was published in Newsband

Central Government and not Kejriwal is at fault
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was both praised and criticized for sitting in dharna in Delhi. His critics question as to whether this was the alternative form of politics and administration that he had promised. The same critics never uttered a word when in the past Congress or Bharatiya Janata Party staged bandhs.
Kejriwal’s only demand was that police officers who refused to comply with his Minister’s orders be suspended. The Minister had given orders to take certain steps to stop prostitution and drug-peddling. Now what is wrong in it?
The fact is Kejriwal was just paying special attention to an issue pertaining to women security need since this was a major issue in Delhi which recently witnessed Nirbhaya gang rape. CM Kejriwal had to sit on dharna since his government needed police cooperation to be in a position to function properly.
Kejriwal could have sat in his air-conditioned home in peace. But he didn’t do that. Instead, Kejriwal made it clear that the decaying political system across the length and breadth of the country is no more acceptable to the common man; and to challenge and change it, he chose to hit the streets, spend a whole night out there even when the temperature had fallen to four degrees to make his voice heard and to lead the common man from the front. Kejriwal proved that the interest of the common man was more important to him than the loafs and fishes his new office provided.
Kejriwal is there to carry the brunt of the all prevailing mis-governance and corruption in every walk of life. Unlike Congress and BJP, he doesn’t believe that politics is nothing more than a very handsomely or rather richly paying Career where you just have to offer lip sympathy to the common man’s concerns.
Another thing is that the Central Government has the Delhi Police under its control but does not and in fact, cannot control the law and order situation in Delhi and this has resulted in Delhi getting the bizarre sobriquet of being the Rape & Crime Capital of India. Yet the Central Government is unwilling to let go of its deficient control and management and transfer the control and management of the police to the elected Delhi government.

Therefore, if the Delhi police, by virtue of being under the Central Government openly indulges in intransigence and disregards the considered advise of the Law Minister of Delhi and if the Central Home Minister remains unmoved even when the CM approaches him to resolve the problem then what other option is available to Kejriwal than go for a peaceful satyagraha through a Dharna with his supporters to make the Central Government realize its folly?

12 Years a Slave

12 Years a Slave is a 2013 British-American historical drama film and an adaptation of the 1853 memoir of the same name by Solomon Northup, a New York State-born free negro who was kidnapped in Washington, D.C. in 1841 and sold into slavery. He worked on plantations in the state of Louisiana for twelve years before his release. The first scholarly edition of Northup's memoir, co-edited in 1968 by Sue Eakin and Joseph Logsdon, carefully retraced and validated the account and concluded it to be accurate.
This third feature film directed by Steve McQueen was written by John Ridley. Chiwetel Ejiofor starred in the leading role of Northup. Michael Fassbender, Benedict Cumberbatch, Paul Dano, Paul Giamatti, Lupita Nyong'o, Sarah Paulson, Brad Pitt and Alfre Woodard featured in supporting roles.
The film is based on an incredible true story of one man's fight for survival and freedom. In the pre-Civil War United States, Solomon Northup (Chiwetel Ejiofor), a free black man from upstate New York, is abducted and sold into slavery. Facing cruelty (personified by a malevolent slave owner, portrayed by Michael Fassbender), as well as unexpected kindnesses, Solomon struggles not only to stay alive, but to retain his dignity. In the twelfth year of his unforgettable odyssey, Solomon's chance meeting with a Canadian abolitionist (Brad Pitt) forever alters his life.

I, Frankenstein

I, Frankenstein is a 2014 Australian-American fantasy action film written and directed by Stuart Beattie, based on the graphic novel and original screenplay by Kevin Grevioux. It stars Aaron Eckhart, Bill Nighy, Yvonne Strahovski, Miranda Otto, Socratis Otto, Jai Courtney and Kevin Grevioux.
I, Frankenstein begins with the demise of Victor Frankenstein, who freezes to death trying to hunt and kill his abominable monster, Adam (Aaron Eckhart). Adam feels compelled to give Frankenstein a proper burial and he travels back home in order to do so, at which point he (and Frankenstein’s reanimation sketch book) becomes embroiled in a war between Gargoyles (who are essentially Angels) and Demons. He’s taken by force to the Gargoyle castle by Gideon (Jai Courtney) and they all pretty much decide he should be destroyed. That’s when the Gargoyle Queen (Miranda Otto) steps in, sees something worth saving in Adam’s soulless eyes and decides to release him.

Adam spends 200 years practicing martial arts in the mountains before he is thrust back into the whole Gargoyle vs. Demon thing in the present day. There’s a Demon Prince named Naberius (played by Bill Nighy – the only person in the movie who seems vaguely alive) who is also the CEO of a company that’s trying to perfect reanimation via electricity in order to bring an army of the dead to life so the Demons can possess them because they have no souls. The beautiful Terra (Yvonne Strahovski) is the innocent electrophysiologist tasked with making this happen. It turns out that either Adam or Frankenstein’s journal would be pretty helpful in making this happen. From here the movie moves towards an interesting climax.

Dinesh Kamath's Editorial 'Pros and cons of RBI’s move' that was published in Newsband

Pros and cons of RBI’s move
The Reserve Bank of India has decided to withdraw from circulation all currency notes issued prior to 2005. The objective of the RBI move could be to flush out unaccounted money and either bring it back into the system or strip it of its value. The RBI move will also help eliminate counterfeit notes from the system. The RBI’s move will make life difficult for those who have hoarded currency notes. The timing of the move is just ahead of general elections.
But is it equally applicable to all denominations? Keeping out Rs. 20, 10 and 5 denominations out of this exercise may be desirable as black money is hardly in these denominations.
This move is commendable since counterfeiting of Indian currency is very common and our neighboring countries are reportedly using counterfeit currency to devalue the INR and stoke inflation. But the fact remains that a large amount of currency is in the 'black' market. One of the unintended consequences of this move is that black money will now flow into assets. We can expect a spike in gold prices and perhaps real estate as well. But by far the major impact will be on how people view currency notes in the future. This will modify the cash only mentality and force more to adopt other instruments for their transactions.
This move will also have its negative side. This move will result in lot of problems for common man. From now onwards, people and shops will refuse to accept any currency note issued before 2005 and there will be chaos.
The year printed on the notes issued from 2005 onwards is on the backside of note and it is in a very small size. It can be found and read, perhaps, only under a magnifying glass. People in general and particularly illiterate and visually handicapped persons will find it difficult to distinguish between the pre-2005 and post-2004 notes.

Unless these notes reach banks, where they will be ultimately detected as invalid, they will continue to be in circulation, which is akin to having counterfeit notes in circulation. Moreover, even if an ordinary citizen finds himself being given a pre-2005 note by a shopkeeper, bus conductor etc. is he expected to refuse it or accept it and take the trouble of exchanging it in a bank, waiting for his turn in serpentine queues?

Dinesh Kamath's Editorial 'India should become totally socialistic and not capitalistic' that was published in Newsband

India should become totally socialistic and not capitalistic
Reasonable insurance schemes should cover all the workers and their dependents who exist in big number in India. Also the workforce which enjoys any social protection in India is very less. The thing is the Acts that are made for the factories should also apply to transport undertakings, hospitals, newspapers, the hospitality industry and educational institutions. There is need to enlarge the scope of medical services. These services should be provided to workforce which lies even outside the formal sector.
India must adopt a system of universal health coverage that is entirely tax-funded and cashless at delivery. There should be a comprehensive approach to health care that transcends conventional forms of illness response and insurance schemes that divert huge resources into expensive hospitalised treatment. The emphasis should be on prevention, primary care and augmenting the social determinants of health such as basic sanitation, clean drinking water, minimum wages and primary education.
Only a healthy population can make India an economic power-house. We need Universal Health Insurance. Better to give free food, healthcare, education, housing, stipends to everyone and make everyone be in Armed Forces or National Service or working.
Clean Water, Food, Nutrition, Hygiene, Clean Environment, primary education etc. are fundamental requirements, which cannot be ignored or inadequately addressed by any country which is aspiring to become a developed country.
We seem to be only tinkering the problems here and there just to derive maximum publicity and thereby create a hype and get away with it. How long will this go on? The emphasis seems to be only on window dressing thereby neglecting the fundamental issues which are truly daunting. Taking care of these will bring about an improvement in the quality of life which will automatically take care of many of the things.
We should focus on solutions to the root problems not just on their reflections. Indians are a confused lot. They are not sure whether they should adopt a socialistic approach like the Western countries or develop a capitalistic attitude like Russia and China. Indians should realize soon that it cannot have both sides of the bread buttered. Capitalism and socialism cannot coexist. We should be totally socialistic.

Our government becomes socialistic before elections and talks of capitalism after elections. How long will this dumb charade continue to be played?

Dinesh Kamath's Editorial 'Congress is a party of, by and for the Gandhi family' that was published in Newsband

Congress is a party of, by and for the Gandhi family
Recently, at a session of the All-India Congress Committee, Rahul Gandhi gave a speech. In this event, he gave a signal that he was ready to lead. The Congress vice-president did not name the Aam Aadmi Party or the Bharatiya Janata Party but insinuated that while one practised ad hoc street politics disconnected from due process, the other was driven by the personality cult.
While making the speech Gandhi was at his combative best, no doubt. But the speech was definitely not thoughtful enough. It was just sound and fury.
How can Gandhi be the natural ‘leader’ of a democratic society? If he was a choice by the Congress party workers owing to his performance or leadership qualities then it would be okay. But if just because he belongs to a certain family, Gandhi is chosen as the leader of Congress party or PM candidate, then it poses a lot of questions. Except being the son of Rajiv Gandhi, there is no added quality for Gandhi especially when he is compared with some current Congressmen who obviously possess leadership qualities. When will Indian National Congress show the real democratic principle as it claims?
Neither Rahul Gandhi nor Sonia Gandhi has a genuine programme. They just give the instances of past achievements. The past does not envisage the present days of politics. It just remains as a reference, not a remedy of problem.
How so ever strong the speech by Gandhi is, it just remains mere speech and people cannot be fooled this time.
There is no denying the fact that the party owes its existence as a power to reckon with throughout the length and breadth of the entire country solely to the Gandhi family. Further more, along with Aam Aadmi Party, it is the political entity that can rightly claim to be a bulwark against the dangerous possibility of the take over of the country by communal and sectarian forces. Unfortunately it is this same dependence of the weaker sections of society like the large Muslim minority, the dalits and tribals, by and large, on this party, that makes it a convenient vehicle for corruption.
Rahul Gandhi doesn't offer any constructive ideas except making more laws in over-legislated India where laws are poorly written and made more to complete the exercise rather than change situation on ground.
Rahul Gandhi was proof of acceptance of inaction on his and his party’s part for last 10 years where he watched the drama from the sidelines and intervened sporadically. We neither heard much from him in parliament nor did he speak on any burning issues.

The Congress has not announced any PM candidate before elections and has left the decision to the elected representatives of the people. This is just to show that they respect the constitutional values. But if Congress wins the election and someone other than Rahul Gandhi is chosen as the Prime Minister, then this new PM will just be a puppet in the hands of Gandhi family – the way Manmohan Singh was.

Dinesh Kamath’s column ‘New movie-releases in Navi Mumbai’ (Jai Ho and Mandela – Long Walk to Freedom) that was published in Newsband

New movie-releases in Navi Mumbai
By Dinesh Kamath
Jai Ho

Jai Ho is a Hindi-language Indian action Drama feature film directed by Sohail Khan and produced by Sohail Khan alongwith Sunil Lulla, starring Salman Khan and newcomer Daisy Shah alongwith Sana Khan and Suniel Shetty in major roles. The film has Tabu playing Salman's sister while Danny Denzongpa plays the main antagonist. The film is a remake of Telugu film Stalin starring Chiranjeevi.
Jai Ho is the story of Major Jai Agnihotri, who creates a nation-wide movement by convincing people to do a good deed for three people who must in turn each do good deeds for three other people.
Jai, an upright common man is fighting a solitary war against corruption and injustice. Honest and incorruptible, he has made it his mission to help as many people as he can. His mantra is quite simple - help somebody and then request that person to lend a helping hand to somebody else - thus forming an ever growing circle of people helping each other.
In a strange twist of fate, he finds himself pitted against a powerful politician and his vile family. Jai who is an ex army officer, will not shy away from a battle, however bloody it may get and firmly believes that you do not have to wear an uniform to serve your country. As the politician unleashes his violent goons on brave heart Jai, Geeta, Jai's sister, realizes the horrific consequences this can have on her brother and the rest of their family.
She persuades a reluctant Jai to make peace with the politician. But when this leads to humiliation being heaped on him, Jai loses his cool and declares all out war. It is an unequal war - one side stand the politician with his numerous henchmen and on one side is Jai - alone.
But unknown to him, a silent revolution is taking place. The voiceless public, he has helped in the past, is gathering force. It finally has a voice and this voice cannot and will not be silenced.
Because Jai Ho is the resounding sound of victory...Jai Ho is the warrior cry of someone determined to win at all cost...
Thus the film has Salman Khan as Major Jai Agnihotri, Tabu as Riya Agnihotri (Jai's Sister), Suniel Shetty as Officer Ranvir Kaul, Danny Denzongpa, Sana Khan, Daisy Shah, Nadira Babbar, Genelia D'Souza, Naman Jain, Mahesh Thakur, Resham Tipnis, Ashmit Patel, Yash Tonk, Haroon Qazi, Mohnish Bahl, Mahesh Manjrekar, Prerit Joshi, Aditya Pancholi, Sharad Kapoor, Pulkit Samrat, Tulip Joshi, Varun Badola, Syed Mozzam, Nauheed Cyrusi, Vikas Bhalla, Bruna Abdullah, Sudesh Lehri, Santosh Shukla as Maanik - a corrupt politician, Ankit Pandey as Chor and Vinay Prakash Yadav as Sadhu.
The soundtrack of Jai Ho is composed by Sajid-Wajid, Devi Sri Prasad and Amal Malik. The film has songs like Baaki Sab First Class Hai, Tere Naina Maar Hi Daalenge, Photocopy, Tumko To Aana Hi Tha, Love You Till The End (House Mix), Naacho Re, Jai Jai Jai Jai Ho (Title Track), Photocopy (Remix) and Baaki Sab First Class Hai (Remix).

Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom

Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom is a 2013 British/South African biographical film directed by Justin Chadwick from a script written by William Nicholson and stars Idris Elba and Naomie Harris. The film is based on the 1995 book Long Walk to Freedom by anti-apartheid revolutionary and former South African President Nelson Mandela.
The film is based on President Nelson Mandela's early life, his coming of age, education and 27 years in prison before becoming President and working to rebuild the country’s once segregated society. Idris Elba stars as Nelson Mandela, Naomie Harris stars as Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, with Justin Chadwick directing.
In this film, Idris Elba plays Nelson Mandela, starting out as a young black lawyer of proud Xhosa heritage in post-war Johannesburg, sharp of both wits and dress, attempting to remedy the desperate situations of the dispossessed who ask for his help. At first, he shuns the members of the ANC who beseech him to get involved, but as the grotesqueries of the apartheid regime become closer and more intimate, his political radicalism takes root.
He grows apart from his first wife and closer to his ANC colleagues and a glamorous, outspoken 22-year-old social worker called Winnie Madikizela (Naomie Harris), who’s to become his second wife.
The movie depicts the major events of 20th-century South African history: the extension and heavy enforcement of the Pass Laws; the stark brutality of the 1960 Sharpeville massacre of black protestors; the ANC’s ensuing campaign of sabotage; and the trial at which Mandela and his fellow ANC members were sentenced to life imprisonment.
Yet, if the film is a tale of political action, it is also one of wider personal sacrifice, of which Mandela’s own 27-year imprisonment is but one element. The story dwells, rightly, on the ferocity of absence: the relentless hollowing-out of what should have been a happy family life. We glimpse the husbandless wife, the fatherless children, the space for resentments and infidelities. When Mandela is finally released from jail, he finds himself married to a nation, but estranged from his dearly loved wife.
The movie also exposes the cruel circumstances in which Winnie’s ruthlessness was forged: the state torture, solitary confinement, exile and house arrest that drain the joie de vivre from her and replace it with something more bitter. Somehow, Mandela himself manages to move in the opposite direction: there is a small, touching scene in which he gently chastises his grand-children for ridiculing his white guards.
Nearing the end, with Elba’s face partly immobilised in ageing make-up, the pace slows respectfully along with him.

Thus the film has Idris Elba as Nelson Mandela, Naomie Harris as Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, Tony Kgoroge as Walter Sisulu, Riaad Moosa as Ahmed Kathrada, Zolani Mkiva as Raymond Mhlaba, Simo Mogwaza as Andrew Mlangeni, Fana Mokoena as Govan Mbeki, Thapelo Mokoena as Elias Motsoaledi, Jamie Bartlett as James Gregory, Deon Lotz as Kobie Coetzee and Terry Pheto as Evelyn Mase.

NAVI MUMBAI: The renowned writer and orator Mr. Ketan Bhagat has stressed the need of self realization and evaluation that are needed for the revolution. He was conducting a workshop at ‘Shikhar 2014’, the annual management fest of Bharati Vidyapeeth Institute of Management Studies and Research.
In his workshop, he motivated the youth to come forward and contribute to the nation building. He said that youth are having enormous energy, potential and ambitions. It is the duty of their gurus and mentors to identify their core competency and sharpen them so that they have an appealing personality and self contentment.
Ketan has elaborated his thought by comparing the different characters of a jungle lion and a circus lion. Jungle lions are independent, creative and enjoy his fullest of potential while a circus lion only follows his ring master and his domain is fixed. He stressed that the need is to force not to follow, always.
He stressed that the soul is the ultimate guiding source of stimulus to supply energy for practicing creativity. All men are full of potential. The need is to give it a direction. This idea he has expressed and narrated in his book “Complete Convenient”.
Ketan has also given complimentary copies of his recent book “Complete Convenient” on the floor of “Shikhar 2014”. The entire audience enjoyed and praised Ketan for his remarkable concept of rejuvenation.

The highlights of the program were Ketan’s smart sense of humor and lively demeanour which enlightened the audience and his emphasis on self realization that administers the life transformation.

Dinesh Kamath's Editorial 'Well done again, ISRO!' that was published in Newsband

Well done again, ISRO!
The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is doing wonders. Just recently, it had sent off the Mars Orbiter Mission. Now it has put Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV) into orbit with effortless ease. GSLV will help Chandrayaan-2, which is expected to put an Indian lander and rover on the moon in a few years’ time. ISRO is now working on a more powerful rocket, the GSLV Mark III. Great!
Research is critical to development of technologies. The investments made by Western economies in science have led to a number of commercial technologies which have given them a huge advantage in development. If we fail to invest in such avenues, we will be buying such services from these countries at exorbitant costs and will be exposed to threat of sanctions. So, in order to have an independent foreign policy, we should be self-reliant technologically.
While we still live in a country plagued by hunger and dearth of toilets, we should focus on tackling both issues (basic necessities, research) simultaneously rather than sequentially.
We salute the ISRO team for their advanced scientific endeavour and for helping to improve future capabilities through knowledge exchange at indigenous fundamental research and training, academic, industrial and entrepreneurial verticals - all with the aim of contributing even more to raise the standard and quality of life of all.
Funding for space research and all other types of research activities is well justified, even if there is hunger, poverty and all sorts of miseries. It is the problem of the administration lacunae. A country needs to be advanced in the research fields and their effect will finally show, though through a gradual process, on the common man. The advanced meteorological warnings, video conferences, medical innovations, remote sensing (agricultural patterns), navigation are directly or indirectly related the life of a common Indian. Also in this world of hostility where new geo-political developments are taking place, one cannot be dependent on foreign nation for these important needs.
We must learn from Japan. In spite of many disasters they face they spend enormously on research works. That's why they are advanced. We need to learn from examples set by them.
As ISRO has developed many weapons for the countries security by investing crores of money but the governing bodies should not misuse or keep unused these new technologies. They must use if for the development and safety of the nation.
While we have acquired complete mastery in solid and earth-storable liquid motors, it is the high-energy cryogenic and semi-cryogenic engines alone that can take us further in utilizing space for the common good of Indians in particular and mankind in general. Our country can get the fullest benefits of exploiting the space only when we achieve that.
The execution of missions has been impeccable and we now stand at par with major powers of the world as far as space tech goes. Next logical step should be to open up our GSLV for commercial purpose. Let other countries launch their satellites using our GSLV capabilities. And let’s make money out of it. Let’s give big guys a run for their money.

Anyway, kudos to the Team ISRO!
