I completed four and a half years as Editor of  daily newspaper Newsband on 31 March 2016. I was appointed as Editor of Newsband on 30 September 2011. My success as Editor of Newsband was owing to the support I got from Publisher Kailash Gindodia, my Newsband team, Readers of Newsband and my Family members and Well-wishers. I thank them all!

Will Lion Savitha Nayak become the Vice District Governor-2?

NAVI MUMBAI: Lions Club of NRI has proposed the candidature of Lion Savitha H. Nayak, MJF, for the position of Vice District Governor-2 and accordingly Mrs Nayak has decided to contest in the ensuing elections scheduled for 3^rd April 2016.

Lion Savitha Nayak had joined Lionism in 1994 and since then she was involved in many social activities and attended international conferences and also district and national conventions and seminars, besides attending to her family responsibilities very efficiently. She had joined as Club Member and by 2015-16 she rose to the position of D.C. – Cultural & Community Service and now she is contesting election for the position of Vice District Governor-2.

Lion Savitha Nayak has held several responsibilities in Lions District, spread across various functions, during her Lionistic career spanning more than 22 years. She has been an eminent Social Worker in this part of the District and has contributed in no small measure to the cultural and social development of Navi Mumbai.

Additionally, the prestigious Mother Teresa Award was also conferred on her, in recognition of her yeomen services to the poor and the downtrodden of Navi Mumbai. Her family has been active in Lionism for many years. Her husband Lion Haridas Nayak, a construction Engineer by profession, has been a member of Lions Club of Vashi since 1997. Her daughter was a Leo for 5 years and was also the Leo President for the year 2003-04. Her son was also a Leo from 2002-05. In effect, her family has a combined experience of almost 50 years in Lionism.

Lion Savitha Nayak is a full time, 24 x 7 Lion and has devoted herself to the cause of Lionism. She eats, drinks, sleeps as well as dreams of Lionism. It is clear that Lionism runs in the veins of Savitha Nayak and her family.

Broadly, Lion Savitha Nayak’s plans for her District are as follow: (1) Expand Leo Club base in our District. LEO stands for Leadership, Experience and Opportunity. Leos are the future Lions and it is imperative that the base of Leos need to be expanded geometrically. (2) Motivate Lioness Members to become Lions. Her home club, Lions Club of NRI, has may such members who are both Lions and Lionesses. (3) Tap various sources to bring in quality members while retaining existing members. (4) Wants to introduce proper transportation facilities for the Adivasi villages to come for Mass Marriages and Cataract Eye Operations.

The District 323 A-2 is the only District in Mumbai that has not elected a Lady District Governor so far. The other two Districts, A-1 and A-3, have had their Lady District Governors in the past. Thus on 3^rd April, franchise will be exercised by members of the Lions Club and it will be interesting to know whether Lion Savitha H Nayak will succeed in becoming the first lady to be the Vice District Governor-2.

Ensure perfect implementation of rules to manage e-waste

The Ministry of Environment and Forests have come up with new rules to manage electronic waste. If these rules are properly implemented, they will close the gap between growing volumes of hazardous trash and inadequate recycling infrastructure. Producers and consumers of electronic goods have a responsibility to ensure proper disposal of electronic waste,

Some units use crude methods such as open burning to extract copper, lead, aluminium and iron. The concentrated acids are used in an open-air environment to remove copper from printed circuit boards; the corrosive chemicals are then discharged into surrounding lands. Several cities are similarly polluted.

Hence the Environment Ministry must work closely with the States to implement the tighter rules. The success of the new rules will depend on incentivising consumers to enter the formal recycling channel using the producer-operated buy-back scheme. The policy is still in its nascent stage, but the intent is great. The Government should make arrangements to promote this drive and create awareness across the villages of the nation. Hopefully, we would see people acting positively on this count.

The government should also double its recycle sites from the current 151 sites to 302. The funds required to do this should be included in the budget in the same category used for cleaning cities and towns. Illegal dumping of e waste is a health hazard. Care needs to be taken to dump and treat this waste in a dedicated site that will have facilities in place to ensure that e waste is properly treated so that it doesn’t pollute the environment and result in unwanted out breaks of diseases.

The making of new rules by the government is certainly an appreciable move.

People have a tendency of not letting go the defunct electronic gadgets. Perfect implementation of these rules will really help to achieve a better environment.

Also the industrial tycoons and corporates have a vital role to play in stemming the volume of electronic waste. Goods produced must be thoroughly checked and standards must be maintained to see that the money and material of consumers do not go waste in quest of purchasing goods for comfort.

Ki & Ka

Ki & Ka (English: Hers and His) is an Indian romantic comedy-drama film written, directed, and produced by R. Balki. The film follows a young, married couple contradicting the gender roles placed upon women and men in Indian society. It stars Kareena Kapoor and Arjun Kapoor.

The movie has an interesting plot. A young couple's marriage challenges the gender roles placed upon men and women in Indian society. The film starring Kareena Kapoor and Arjun Kapoor talks about the notions of Indian society regarding a working wife and house-husband. 'Ki and Ka' tries to break that set mould of the society. This romantic-drama will see Kareena as an ambitious marketing manager of a firm while Arjun will be seen as a supporting house-husband who wants to stay away from ambitions and be more like his mother. Ki and Ka speaks of a story where Kareena Kapoor wears the ‘pants’ in the relationship while her lover Arjun Kapoor is content handling the house. Househusbands are a rare breed in India. In this movie you will see a man whose only ambition in life is to take care of his house while his wife brings in the money home. Such role reversals are barely seen in the very patriarchal India. Thus the movie narrates the love story spun between Kareena and Arjun skilfully woven through role reversals. From displaying Arjun chopping vegetables to him shying away from sex citing exhaustion even as Kareena demands it (of course Arjun finally gives in), Ki and Ka beautifully packs all things needed for an entertaining watch.

The film has Kareena Kapoor as Kia, Arjun Kapoor as Kabir, Swaroop Sampat, Rajit Kapur, Amitabh Bachchan (cameo) and Jaya Bachchan (cameo).

The soundtrack album features songs composed by Meet Bros Anjjan and Mithoon for the T-Series label besides having an original song composed by Balki's regular collaborator Ilaiyaraaja, who has also composed the background score of the movie. Lyrics have been penned by Kumaar, Amitabh Bhattacharya and Sayeed Quadri.

The film has songs like "High Heels", "Ji Huzoori", "Most Wanted Munda", "Foolishq", "Pump It (The Workout Song)" and "Kabir Most Wanted Munda".

Kung Fu Panda 3

Kung Fu Panda 3 is a 2016 3D American-Chinese computer-animated action comedy martial arts film, produced by DreamWorks Animation and Oriental DreamWorks, and distributed by 20th Century Fox. It was directed by Jennifer Yuh Nelson and Alessandro Carloni. The film was written by Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger, produced by Melissa Cobb, and executive produced by Guillermo del Toro. It is a sequel to the 2011 film Kung Fu Panda 2 and the third instalment in the Kung Fu Panda franchise. The film features the voices of Jack Black, Angelina Jolie, Dustin Hoffman, J. K. Simmons, Jackie Chan, Lucy Liu, Seth Rogen, David Cross, Bryan Cranston, Kate Hudson, and James Hong. Jean-Claude Van Damme and Randall Duk Kim reprise their roles as Master Croc and Oogway from the previous two films.

The movie has an interesting story. When Po's long-lost panda father suddenly reappears, the reunited duo travels to a secret panda paradise to meet scores of hilarious new panda characters. But when the supernatural villain Kai begins to sweep across China defeating all the kung fu masters, Po must do the impossible-learn to train a village full of his fun-loving, clumsy brethren to become the ultimate band of Kung Fu Pandas.

Allegiant

The Divergent Series: Allegiant (also known simply as Allegiant) is a 2016 American science fiction adventure film directed by Robert Schwentke with a screenplay by Stephen Chbosky, Bill Collage, Adam Cooper, and Noah Oppenheim. It is the first of two cinematic parts based on the novel Allegiant, the final book in the Divergent trilogy by Veronica Roth, and the third installment in The Divergent Series, produced by Lucy Fisher, Pouya Shabazian, and Douglas Wick, and distributed by Lionsgate. The film stars Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Jeff Daniels, Miles Teller, Ansel Elgort, Zoë Kravitz, Maggie Q, Ray Stevenson, Daniel Dae Kim, Bill Skarsgård, Octavia Spencer and Naomi Watts. It is the sequel to Insurgent and will be followed by the concluding entry, Ascendant (Allegiant and Ascendant were originally to be titled Allegiant – Part 1 and Allegiant – Part 2).

The movie has an interesting story. After the earth-shattering revelations of Insurgent, Tris (Shailene Woodley) must escape with Four (Theo James) and go beyond the wall enclosing Chicago. For the first time ever, they will leave the only city and family they have ever known in order to find a peaceful solution for their embroiled city. Once outside, old discoveries are quickly rendered meaningless with the revelation of shocking new truths. Tris and Four must quickly decide who they can trust as a ruthless battle ignites beyond the walls of Chicago which threatens all of humanity. In order to survive, Tris will be forced to make impossible choices about courage, allegiance, sacrifice and love.

Proper maintenance of holding ponds is absolutely necessary

NAVI MUMBAI: How secure are the lakes in Navi Mumbai and are they well guarded by security men? People are interested in those lakes where fishing and boating are permitted. Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation had permitted fishing in lakes covering area of one hectare. May residents suggested that they lease out some lakes to derive profit.

The lake in sector 19, Koparkhairane and Rajiv Gandhi lake in Gothivali, spread over 3.24 and 2.04 hectares, are two bigger lakes in Navi Mumbai and here boating can be real fun. People who love fishing too can have great time here. But there are many city residents who are of the opinion that boating should be allowed in all the lakes. But it is difficult to get tenders for boating in small lakes which are around 20 in number.

According to a resident, deployment of security guards around these lakes is a must since many children visit the lakes and they face the danger of getting drowned. Guards who know swimming will be fit for such places, he added. Otherwise nobody should be allowed to enter the water, he said.

Since a long time, the civic body has been trying to come up with perfect method of maintaining the lakes. If these lakes are leased out to fishermen, they will use their skills in breeding fishes in these lakes.

This Holding Pond in Koparkhairane is one of many holding ponds in Navi Mumbai, which were created during the formative years of this satellite city in 1980s. These holding ponds act as a buffer between the storm water drain and the creek. They help in both storing water and preventing flooding of water. An architect was of the opinion that combination of park and holding ponds will prove to be very useful.

When asked about these holding ponds, an expert in this subject said, “NMMC should ensure that these holding ponds are cleaned from time to time and if they don’t do that the environment activists should file a petition in High Court and get the court to force NMMC to clean the ponds. Siltation and mangrove growth near holding ponds should be prevented since this can affect the holding capacity of the ponds. De-silting works of all the ponds should be done at regular intervals. These ponds need to be properly managed since any kind of negligence can affect the beauty and usefulness of the ponds. If the ponds are not cleaned it can prove to be hazardous for the entire city. It is good that civic body comes up with its annual green report which indicates the exact position of the ponds every year. In case of any kind of damage in and around these holding ponds, immediate repair work should be carried out since this will make the place around these ponds flood-free. A watch should be kept on movement of creek water in and out of the holding ponds and growth of mangroves in these ponds to keep control over both. Care should be taken to ensure that holding capacity of these ponds do not get reduced and for this perfect maintenance of the ponds is necessary. The NMMC had approached the Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority (MCZMA) which permitted to clear of mangroves in the centre of the ponds with the court's permission. Navi Mumbai city was developed by CIDCO on low lying areas as a result of which the creek water enters the city during high tide. To avoid flooding, the storm water management of Navi Mumbai has been planned on the lines of Netherlands, which is called the Dutch method. The main reason why holding ponds were constructed was to control flood during heavy rains. But it is not the rain only which can cause flooding, but not cleaning and maintaining these ponds can also lead to heavy flooding. If the city authorities make up their minds to maintain properly all the ponds in Navi Mumbai, it will prove to be a boon to city residents.”

National Awards reflect the nation

The announcement of the National Awards every years excites all the movie-lovers in India simply because a big number of awards are conferred upon films of a State, made in the local language. This time not only states like Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh showcased their films but there was even a film made last year in the Wancho language spoken by a tribal people in the hills of Arunachal Pradesh. There are films being made in Khasi, Bodo, Manipuri, Maithili, Mizo, Konkani, even Sanskrit. These films touch upon social issues, to environment conservation and preservation, to the educational and entertainment needs of children.

The National Awards reflect the nation, where several interests need to be balanced for the overall good. Baahubali deserved Best Picture Award. It managed to unite the nation’s movie-watching public as no other film in recent times, across regional State lines, even across the Vindhyas. Bahubali attracted national attention because of the budget and the CG.

The film makers, to ensure profitability of their venture, they need to be sure that the movies receive wide appeal. The marketing helped in assuring the same and the results are known. A movie needs to be assessed on the basis of movie making skills, social responsibility, the effect it brings on the viewers and the innovation done in the movie. Only then even small budget film makers will be motivated to deliver a quality product.

National Award Ceremony is the celebration of cultural diversity. A successful film makes its journey to other regions. It is good for industry and good for Nation.

The last thing is that any Award should be given in accordance with their merits and not based on whether it is from north India or from south India.

Criminal activities of sand mafia in Navi Mumbai need to be controlled

NAVI MUMBAI: The cases of Illegal sand mining in Navi Mumbai are on the rise. During recent times many have been spotted indulging in illegal sand mining near the creeks. In spite of Navi Mumbai policemen having seized a huge quantity of illegally excavated sand and machinery, this criminal activity continues. There are complaints about sand being excavated legally lodged in many police stations in Navi Mumbai but it seems the city police are finding it extremely difficult to control such illegal activities. It could be owing to less number of staff or the mafia that pursues illegal sand mining activities could be too strong for city police to tackle. But the time has come when something very drastic that will be needed to be done to control this particular type of crime.

It is not that Navi Mumbai police are doing absolutely nothing about this crime. In fact, the city police have done commendable jobs of seizing machineries and excavated sand from time to time. They have been raiding promptly the places from where the tip offs about sand mining crimes taking place were reported. But most of the time the criminals involved in such illegal activities happen to escape leaving behind the sand and machineries which are seized by the cops.

There is a need to come up with strong policy to totally prevent illegal sand mining and the criminals involved in the activity should be denied access to the creek whether by road or sea. A number of times, the police have seized the boats used for such activities. 

The sand which are excavated illegally by the mafia are sold to the builders particularly. These builders buy the sand at a cheaper rate in spite of knowing that they are illegally excavated along the creek in the city. The senior policemen are of the opinion that even such builders who buy illegally excavated sand and thus encourage illegal sand mining should also be brought to book. If this is done the builders will be under constant fear of being arrested by Law if they purchase smuggled sand and this in turn can prevent them from buying the sand which in turn will lessen the cases of illegal sand mining happening in the city.

If the state government too provides our city cops with more manpower and appropriate technological equipment, such cases of illegal sand mining can be prevented to a great extent if not totally.

Just few days back, a raid was carried out in Kharghar where three trucks half-filled with illegally extracted sand were seized. But here again the persons who committed this crime managed to escape after leaving behind the three trucks. If the police manages to nab at least one main person indulging in such crime, it will be possible to reach the mastermind behind this criminal activity which is on the rise in the city. The city police did manage to arrest some miscreants but there is a need to nab a person who can lead them to the brain who strategizes all these criminal activities.

The main thing is the laws pertaining to illegal sand mining which are not stringent owing to which the police are not able to take stern action against the sand mafia who manage to go scot-free after paying the penalty imposed by Law. Thus, there is an urgent need to come up with strict laws and provide the policemen with both manpower and sophisticated equipment that will enable them to implement the laws.

Provide relief to home buyers

The homebuyers need to be given enough confidence by coming up with right laws related to real estate. As per a survey conducted, about 10 lakh buyers invest every year in a house, a total of 76,044 companies are involved in the real estate sector and a total of 17,526 projects were launched between 2011 and 2015 with an investment value of Rs.13.70 lakh crore.

Considering all these facts, a disciplinary legislation that regulates the haphazard functioning and the presence of unscrupulous operators in the real-estate business needs to be introduced. The Bill will also bring in a sense of comfort and feeling of security to homebuyers. Compulsory registration of any project of the size of 500 square metres in size or involves eight apartments, a separate escrow account to park collections, greater clarity in the definition of carpet area, a tighter penalty norm for structural defects in construction, a mandatory consent clause for changes in construction plans and other such provisions will go a long way in boosting consumer confidence.

There should be penalty provisions, including imprisonment, for contractual failures on the part of a builder. In fact, there should be a complete clean up of the real estate sector. There should be improvement in the trust quotient.

The Real Estate industry is unregulated, builder and real estate agent don't keep their promises in most cases. Delay in possession, land dispute and unsatisfactory delivery of inventory are some of the common problem in the industry. Introduce laws that will force the builders to provide all the information of a project so that the home buyers can confidently invest in the property.

As the Real state sector is growing day by day and it is also a great part of GDP,

passing of a real state bill is good course of action.

The basic need of the buyer is a reasonable price to the buyer and that definitely includes the unreasonable costs in built which are known to all but could not be divulged. These costs are due to moving the papers to get approvals and certificates which are actual expenses but also interest costs due to inordinate delays in approval. The time gap between completion and getting written approvals is considerable. It is high time the government did something drastic to provide relief to all the home buyers.

Government should spare the common man

The Bharatiya Janata Party-led government has decided to act boldly and slash interest rates on several Centrally sponsored savings schemes. The decision will upset senior citizens, and the salaried middle class that forced the government to reconsider its decision to tax a portion of the Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) corpus upon withdrawal. And though the government finally abandoned the Budget 2016 proposal to tax EPF, it was a clear indicator of things to come.

The rate cut covers a broad spectrum of schemes, including the Public Provident Fund (PPF), the Kisan Vikas Patra (KVP) and the National Savings Certificates (NSC). Senior Citizens, who are not covered under any pension scheme, have to depend on the interest from these Small Saving Schemes for their day to day living. Government can at least consider exempting Senior Citizens from these rate cuts.

India needs a welfare state not elite state. The economists of the government must understand the real areas of loss of the government funds and should not attack the small purses of the common people. The sociology of common people needs to be taken care of. High level analyses are of no use at the ground level where common people operate.

The recent changes in the economic policies is having a direct adverse impact on the day to day life of the middle class. Their purchasing power is declining every year due to increase in cost of lower as well as higher education and other necessities of life. Hence the demand for consumer products are declining and they are compelled to over extend themselves by going in for consumer and higher educational loans under EMS or otherwise. Similarly SCS without any social security coverage are compelled to invest in SS Schemes to protect the principal amount and for regular receipt of interest income without any risk. They will be put to hardship in meeting their monthly commitments including ever increasing medical expenses. Let it be taxation - direct or indirect - or reduction in interest rates on deposits it is the middle class that is being hit. It seems the present day policies are directed against the welfare of the so called middle and lower middle class. It needs a change.

The recent SBI research report suggestion to consider differential (higher) rates for savings in the accounts of elders and in age-groups above 45 years is worth looking at. Another group which may deserve differential treatment may be those who are not investing in these instruments for income tax benefit. A related issue is professionalism in management of funds flowing into governments’ kitty which now come from captive sources like LIC, EPFO, banks (SLR deposits), National Savings Schemes and PPF. As these funds are used by government and no investment risk prevalent in money with the banking system is to be factored in, it is natural that savers expect a higher rate of return on investment in such financial instruments. Any thought of relating interest rates on investments in such instruments with bank interests is unacceptable.

New movies released in Navi Mumbai

Rocky Handsome

Rocky Handsome is an Indian action thriller film directed by Nishikant Kamat. It features John Abraham in the lead role while Shruti Haasan, Nishikant Kamat and Sharad Kelkar appear in crucial supporting roles. It is a loose adaptation of the 2010 Korean film The Man from Nowhere. John is co-producing this film under his home banner John Abraham Entertainment with Sunir Khetrapal’s Azure Entertainment. The film’s story revolves around a man who sets out to take vengeance against drug mafia after they take away an eight-year-old girl, with whom he shares a special bond.

The movie has an interesting story. A vengeful man (John Abraham) embarks on a murderous rampage after the kidnapping of a 7-year-old girl. A remake of the Korean film “The Man From Nowhere”, Nishikant Kamat’s “Rocky Handsome” stars John Abraham as a hulking man-robot who seems capable of the most complicated stunts and ruthless killings, but is unable to muster up basic emotions. This is a film where a police officer suggests sending a threatening email to the president of the United States from the email ID of a criminal whose data he wants to access. This way, he tells his awestruck colleagues, the CIA will ask India for his details and in the process, provide access to all his records. As if this isn’t enough, Kamat plays a role in the film — a drug lord who also dabbles in the organ trade along with his brother (Teddy Maurya), an unhinged maniac who flies into rages for unlikely reasons. When Rocky’s neighbour, a single mother and bar dancer (Nathalia Kaur), steals a drug consignment belonging to the brothers, the dealers kidnap her and her daughter. Rocky, who shares a special bond with the daughter, comes out of a self-imposed hibernation to save them.

The film has John Abraham as Kabir Ahlawat/Rocky Handsome, Shruti Haasan as Rukshida, Nishikant Kamat as Kevin Pereira, Sharad Kelkar, Nathalia Kaur as Anna, Baby Diya Chalwad and Nora Fatehi (special appearance) in the song " Rock the party ".

The music for Rocky Handsome has been composed by Sunny Bawra, Inder Bawra, Ankit Tiwari and Bombay Rockers while the lyrics are penned by Kumaar, Manoj Muntashir, Abhendra Kumar Upadhyay, Sachin Pathak, Sagar Lahauri and Shekhar Astitwa. The film has songs like "Rock Tha Party", "Rehnuma", "Alfazon Ki Tarah", "Aye Khuda", "Titliyan", "Aye Khuda (Duet Version)" and "Alfazon Ki Tarah (Unplugged)".

Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is a 2016 American superhero film featuring the DC Comics characters Batman and Superman, distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures. It is a follow-up to 2013's Man of Steel and the second installment in the DC Extended Universe. The film is directed by Zack Snyder, with a screenplay written by Chris Terrio and David S. Goyer, and stars Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Jesse Eisenberg, Diane Lane, Laurence Fishburne, Jeremy Irons, Holly Hunter and Gal Gadot. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is the first live-action film to feature both Batman and Superman, as well as the first theatrical film to feature live-action portrayals of Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and the Flash.

Following the events after Man of Steel, Gotham City-based vigilante Batman travels to Metropolis to preemptively combat Superman, fearing what would happen if the latter is kept unchecked, while another threat endangers humankind. In other words, fearing the actions of a god-like super hero left unchecked, Gotham City’s own formidable, forceful vigilante takes on Metropolis’s most revered, modern-day savior, while the world wrestles with what sort of hero it really needs. And with Batman and Superman at war with one another, a new threat quickly arises, putting mankind in greater danger than it’s ever known before.

Ambarsariya is a Punjabi film directed by Mandeep Kumar, written by Dheeraj Rattan and starring Diljit Dosanjh, Monica Gill, Navneet Kaur Dhillon as the main cast of the film.

The film, which also stars Gul Panag as Diljit’s boss, sees the actor playing the role of an insurance agent and Lauren (his love interest) a photographer. The film talks about a shooter who is going to kill a big personality and everyone knows the shooter’s name but no one knows who he is and from which lane he is going to shoot. The movie also narrates a different story about a policy sales man who talks to much. Overall the movie has a decent Crime, Drama and little Action scenes.

The film has songs like Pagg Wala Munda and Ju Think.
