Jallikattu is a cruel game
The Tamil Nadu State amendment to the Prevention of Cruelty
to Animals Act, 1960, seeks to exempt jallikattu from the purview of the law. The Centre granted its consent to the State
Governor promulgating the ordinance. The protesters are obviously under the
mistaken impression that an ordinance is ‘temporary’. The Supreme Court has declared that jallikattu is inherently cruel and
contrary to the objectives of the PCA.
The cruelty and the risks to life posed by the sport is too much. The Cruelty law which exempts
the Animals scheduled in the List to be killed for Religious Functions allow
the cruelty to continue for military and police purposes.
But the times have changed and we are all beginning to look
at animals with a different perspective. Another question is why the concern is
only for a bull taming sport? It is cruel, agreed. But what about cruelty in
meat shops? Are all animal activists unaware of conditions in which hens/cocks
kept?
In British India, there was a policy that no transgressive
measures be allowed in the conventions, faiths and cultures of natives. This
sport is a cattle festival by agricultural community as part of Sankranthi.
Cock fight and pulling of big stone blocks by bulls is another. But the times
have changed now and it is high time for everyone to change their way of
thinking to suit the current time.
