Dinesh Kamath's review of film Rajneeti which appeared in Newsband newspaper

Rajneeti is a film written, directed and produced by Prakash Jha. The film, shot in Bhopal, stars Ajay Devgan, Ranbir Kapoor, Arjun Rampal and Katrina Kaif in lead roles.
Rajneeti was first denied a censor certificate by the censor board of India as the lead character played by Katrina Kaif appeared to be inspired fully or partially by Congress Party's Chief Sonia Gandhi. But director Prakash Jha dismissed this allegation. He said that he was inspired only by the Indian epic Mahabharata. Reference to electronic voting machines and parts of the film suggesting that women have to compromise to get ahead in politics, crude dialogues about Muslim community and some intimate scenes and excessive violence were removed before giving the film a U/A censor certificate.
Rajneeti narrates the story of Indian politics. It talks about Indian democracy and the way elections are conducted here. It depicts as to how a few people control the destiny of millions. It talks about ambition and the extent to which the characters in the film dare to go to fulfill their desires. The movie depicts bitter and violent battle. The movie talks about powerful people and how they wield power.
The movie has Naseeruddin Shah playing Bhaskar Sanyal. He is a fire-brand leftist leader. He is so powerful that he can afford to challenge even the most powerful leaders. He can do this owing to his political integrity. But in his political life, he commits one mistake which leads to his self-imposed exile. Ajay Devgan plays Sooraj who rose from the backward classes. He is an angry man and also ambitious. He has the necessary leadership quality. His destiny is controlled by his birth and at one stage he has to choose between his friend and family. Then the movie has Nana Patekar playing Brij Gopal who is not politically ambitious but who likes to play mentor and guide behind the scene. He is the one who guides the younger generation of leaders while the battle becomes more and more bloody. Arjun Rampal plays Prithvi Pratam who is a heir to a powerful political legacy. He is eager to occupy the top position. He is a nice and strong man. But his uncontrollable passions almost make his family extinct. Manoj Bajpai plays Veerendra Pratap who is also aspiring for the throne. He believes that he was born to rule and he tries very hard to attain top position by hook or crook. Katrina Kaif plays Indu Sakseria. She is a princess who is beautiful, passionate and arrogant. She loves only one man. But her personal life changes with political scenario in the state. There comes a stage when her personal life becomes very tragic but yet she possesses such a dominant spirit and the never-say-die attitude that she dares to challenge every contender which changes the political future of the state. The movie also has Sarah Thompson playing Sarah Jean Collins who hailed form a bloody and violent place. She escapes from that place, all bruised and hurt. She falls in love with someone who shares a similar legacy. But his destiny shatters her private world. The film has Ranbir Kapoor playing Samar Pratap who reluctantly makes an entry into politics just because he belonged to a top political family. He proves to be a master in the craft of political warfare. The movie depicts his love for a woman who loves and loses him. He is shown as putting up a determined and fierce fight to protect his family. He becomes a big part of the bloodiest final battles.
Thus the movie depicts how elections are fought in a corrupt manner and with the help of money and muscle power. Here treachery and manipulations are part of the game. The movie depicts the conflict-ridden characters, love and friendship, how relationships are sacrificed while making political alignments and so on. The film has a lot of violence and you just won't know where to draw the line between good and evil and who the hero is and who's the villain. The movie talks about dynasty rule, clashes, wars, bloodshed, murders, conspiracies and so on. The movie, in other words, depicts the modern-day Mahabharata.
Ranbir, who plays younger brother of Arjun Rampal in the movie, is shown as one who would love to lead a quiet private life but who is dragged into dirty politics by circumstance. Arjun Rampal is shown as the one who is given to violent outbursts. He is shown as a mercurial character whose ego easily gets pricked. Katrina is shown as someone who loves Ranbir from childhood days, but the latter loves a girl in US. Her role as a political leader is very short but yet very powerful. She is shown as getting married to Arjun Rampal in the movie. Manoj Bajpai is shown as cousin brother of Arjun and Ranbir. He aspires to be the president of the party which his father had founded and he wants to be CM too. But it is Arjun Rampal and his family who dominate and this makes Manoj clash with his cousins. Ajay Devgan, who is shown as a locally popular Dalit youth leader, is shown as a Karna from the Mahabharat, since he is picked up and elevated in the rival political group. His birth was as a result of random one-night stand which had led to instant pregnancy.
The film has been shot in Bhopal. Director Prakash Jha has wonderfully depicted the abuse of news media, business, caste, religion and so on. The movie talks about coalitions, law courts, police, bureaucracy, even marriages and friendships, all meant to attain power at any cost. All the actors in the film have played their respective roles absolutely convincingly. The credit should go to Prakash Jha for getting them to perform so wonderfully.
Wayne Sharpe, Pritam, Aadesh Shrivastava and Shantanu Moitra are in charge of soundtrack. The lyrics are written by Gulzar, Sameer and Irshad Kamil. The film has songs like Bheegi Si Bhaagi Si sung by Mohit Chauhan and Antara Mitra, More Piya by Aadesh Shrivastava, Shashi and Rosalie Niocholson, Ishq Barse by Pronob Biswas, Hamsika Iyer and Swanand Kirkire, Dhan Dhan Dharti by Shanker Mahadevan, Mora Piya Mo Se Bolat Naahin (Dhol Mix) by Kavita Seth, Ishq Barse (The Bombay Bounce Club Mix) by Pronob Biswas, Hamsika Iyer and Swanand Kirkire, More Piya (Twilight Mix) by Aadesh Shrivastava and Shashi and Dhan Dhan Dharti (Call of the soil) by Sonu Nigam and Wane Sharpe.
On the whole, the film Rajneeti is a very well made film with superlative performances and hence should be watched by every movie lover.
