NAVI MUMBAI: I had attended a fund-raising musical event
at Vishnudas Bhave Auditorium in Vashi. The event showcased the talents of 28
blind children and adults who regaled the audience with memorable songs from
over the years. I was left stunned and speechless after witnessing their
splendid performance. I’ve no words to describe the way they performed!
The Rotary Club
of Satellite City Navi Mumbai (RCSC) had contributed towards organizing this
event in order to make it possible to provide eye care to the economically
backward.
The name of the
event was ‘Ankhiyon ke Jharokhon Se’, put together by Nandu Kadam, who has
staged over 100 productions of the show over the past 15 months. He had held
auditions all over Maharashtra to scout for a talented visually challenged cast
and put together this group.
Their ages ranged
from 13 to 35 years and apart from the 10 singers, the rest were all musicians.
The event
showcased old Bollywood music from 1960 to 1990. The show was scripted in such
a way that each artiste knew his or her cue and the sequence of the songs.
Besides, there were volunteers who helped them if they missed their cue. But it
appeared that after doing so many shows, each one knew his or her part well.
Kedarnath Rao
Ghorpade needs a special mention for being instrumental in organizing this
programme.
The main aim of
the Rotary Club of Navi Mumbai is to set up a Satellite Eye Care Centre in Navi
Mumbai where promotional activities will be held to encourage people to pledge
to donate their eyes. Apart from operative and post operative eye care, it will
be conducting awareness camps which will enhance the vocational skills of
visually impaired people. The initiative will also enable them to find gainful
employment.
This event brought my memories alive with so much of action, perseverance and commitment that everyone had collectively shown towards the event.
