PWD versus Environmentalists
By Dinesh Kamath
NAVI MUMBAI: Public Works Department is being
pressurized by the environment experts into stopping their act of hacking trees
on the Sion-Panvel highway which they are indulging in just to enable them to
widen the road.
This department
had targeted more than thousand fully grown trees and they are in the process
of bringing them down. Many were destroyed and there are some yet to be brought
down. The environment experts have been pleading to the PWD authorities to come
up with some alternative method other than hacking trees to carry out their
development work. According to them, hacking of trees is very simple but it is
extremely difficult to replant trees. They say that trees provide shade to the
city and prevent the land from becoming hot and this prevents global warming
which is an important issue discussed all over the world. If these trees are
hacked, they say, there won’t be any other way in which the atmosphere could be
cooled and this will affect the residents staying in the region where these
trees are being brought down.
However, PWD
officials tried to pacify the environment activists by promising to plant as
many trees as they have cut. But the activists are still feeling bitter about
the large-scale destruction of the trees. Thus the war between PWD authorities
and environment activists has become the talk of the town.
