Borg McEnroe
Borg McEnroe(Swedish: Borg,
Finnish: Borg/McEnroe), also known as Borg vs cEnroe, is a 2017 internationally
co-produced multi-language biographical sports drama film focusing on the
famous rivalry between famous tennis players Björn Borg and John McEnroe at the
1980 Wimbledon Championships, culminating in their encounter in the men's
singles final. The film is directed by Janus Metz Pedersen, from a screenplay
written by Ronnie Sandahl, and stars Sverrir Gudnason, Shia LaBeouf, Stellan
Skarsgård, Tuva Novotny, and Robert Emms. The film opened the 2017 Toronto
International Film Festival.
Exploring the rivalry between
imperturbable world number one Björn Borg and volatile contender, John McEnroe,
in the lead-up to their legendary 1980 Wimbledon final, it’s a clash of the
tennis titans that’s infatuated with the formative psychology of sporting icons
off the court. In 1980, Björn Borg (Sverrir Gudnason) was at the top of his
game, and on course to win a record fifth consecutive Wimbledon title. But
behind the sweat bands it was a different story. Pre-match superstitions
increasingly alienate his nearest and dearest, while suppressed childhood anger
issues threaten to derail Borg’s dominance of the sport he’s dedicated his life
to. In contrast, McEnroe (Shia LaBeouf) is a firecracker. Wearing his heart on
his sleeve, his explosive tantrums make him an easy target for the
controversy-hungry media and public, who delight in openly booing him. The pair
are perfectly matched combatants – the baseline player and the net rusher, the
hot-headed American and nitrogen-cool Swede, the Ice Borg and the Super Brat.
The film has Sverrir Gudnason as
Björn Borg, A Swedish former world no. 1 tennis player. Shia LaBeouf as John
McEnroe: An American former world no. 1 professional tennis player and Borg's
rival. Stellan Skarsgård as Lennart Bergelin:A Swedish tennis player and Borg's
coach. Tuva Novotny as Mariana Simionescu: A Romanian tennis player and Borg's
fiancée. Robert Emms as Vitas Gerulaitis: An American playboy and professional
tennis player. Jason Forbes as Arthur Ashe, Björn Granath as Bengt Grive, Scott
Arthur as Peter Fleming, Tom Datnow as Jimmy Connors, Jane Perry as Kay McEnroe
and Thomas Hedengran as Lennart Hyland.
