Should
Modi be a mediator or not?
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to
Palestine will be “historic” and importantin
the West Asian peace process. Modi is visiting Palestine at an important
juncture when Palestine needs India to interact much more with the region.
The U.S. is already a mediator for Palestine, Now
Palestine wants European Union and EU countries and India too to join US in
supporting them.
Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had
visited India last month. The government is pivoting its interests to Israel’s
rivals: with the PM travelling to Jordan, Palestine, Oman and the UAE this
week, and External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj visiting Saudi Arabia.
Palestine considers India as one of the “few countries
in the world” that has no problems with most of the countries in the region. Hence
India is invited to mediate for Palestine.
Netanyahu had made a statement during his visit
to Delhi that one should “ally with the strong”, not the weak. Obviously Palestine
was the “weaker side” as it was “under occupation”, and India had many technological
requirements from Israel. But yet it was wrong to believe that India would
choose Israel over Palestine.
India is surely analyzing all aspects of
supporting Palestine and its role in West Asia. But what about all the votes in
the UN that Palestine cast on Kashmir Issue that were not favourable to India? Palestine
did not help India when it mattered most for us. Palestinians not voting in
favour of India on Kashmir issue was probably due to the reason that they feel
more about how it hurts or what it matters when your neighbours invade your
home and try to prove it belongs to them. Another time the Palestine hurt India
was when it allowed its Pakistan envoy to meet JEM leader Saeed Hafeez, the
master mind of Mumbai 26/11 bloodshed. Isn’t Palestine playing a double role in
peace process? Now Palestine seeks India's help to resolve crisis in West Asia.
However, one cannot deny that the visit of
Israel PM to India and Modi's visit to Palestine is boosting the image of India
all over the world.
