Dinesh Kamath's article on Madhur Bhandarkar's 'Heroine' that was published in Newsband

Today I'll talk to you about Madhur Bhandarkar's film Heroine.
Actress Kareena Kapoor, who has lately been doing many item numbers in Bollywood, is gearing up for her next item song in Madhur Bhandarkar's Heroine. She is doing a new item song called Halkat Jawani which is a wonderful song that will be picturised on Kareena. I am sure the audiences will love this song. This film Heroine will be a different sort of film for Kareena.
Directed by Bhandarkar, the film Heroine has Kareena and Arjun Rampal in the lead. Forty percent of the film has been finished. The film is expected to be released by September. Bhandarkar also sought to deny speculation that the film is based on Manisha Koirala's life. This film is not based on Manisha Koirala. It is absolutely wrong. Lot of things had been written about the film before. Madhur Bhandarkar has created a character called Mahi Arora who is today's girl. The film is all about how she witnesses the ups and downs in her life.
In the film Heroine, Kareena's character smokes and drinks. A lot of actors say that they draw inspiration from their own life to portray a character… Kareena is playing an onscreen character. That doesn't mean she leads her life in the same way. A girl who's doing an item song isn't an item girl in reality. That's why it's called acting. It's part of the script.
Kareena is having a blast working with Madhur. He's so chilled out. Every director has his own method and Kareena loves Madhur's method because she is like that too. She is eating, doing yoga, chatting with her staff and suddenly breaking into an emotional scene.
If some other actress acts in a film and it's a commercial success no one bothers about it. But when Kareena is in a film people expect her to perform. That's unfair. She loved her role in Bodyguard. Ultimately, she is a commercial star. Bodyguard and RA One have added a lot to her repertoire. She is extremely joyous to see her film become a 100 crore hit. It has given her the courage to get into Heroine. She doesn't like people to say that her performance was good but not the film. The film is also important for her.
Kareena's make-up artists have bagged roles in Heroine. This is as real as it can get. Everyone is aware of the fact that Madhur Bhandarkar's films are a leaf out of real life people and episodes. Now, Kareena's make-up artists Pompy and Ritesh Naik will be seen acting with her in the upcoming film Heroine. Since the film is all about showbiz, the leading lady suggested to the director that real people who knows her face and hair well be made to play the respective parts in the film too. Madhur happily took Kareena's suggestion into consideration and the artists who've been working with her for years will now be seen sharing screen space with Kareena.
Not many starlets admit that they landed films with a little 'string-pulling.' Shilpi Sharma, who stars in Madhur Bhandarkar's upcoming film Heroine, readily admits that that's how she landed the role. A small-time actress who acted in bit roles in films like Style and Thank You, Kareena Kapoor-starrer Heroine will be Shilpi's big ticket to fame.
A long time back, Madhur got a call from a minister, Shilpi's father's friend -- it was when Atal Bihari Vajpayee was the prime minister -- asking to give her a role as she was his friend's daughter. Madhur wasn't ready, and he did not have anything to offer her. He told her straight, 'Shilpi, you come from such a big background, but honestly I can't offer you anything right now, and secondly, I will only give you something that suits you, which brings out your talent.' Madhur and Shilpi kept in touch and one fine day he called her and said he had a film for her, as she suited the role. So Shilpi took it up.
Shilpi is all praise for her director. She finds him a great guy, simple and down to earth. He has no airs so it doesn't feel like you are working with such a huge director.
The first day (of the shoot), she was nervous because he had put so much faith in her, and given her such a big film with such a big star cast. He asked her to follow him blindly and not get nervous. Because of that, Shilpi really gave her best. She has immense respect for Madhur Bhandarkar. Shilpi is bound by her contract not to speak about her role, but says it's an important character in the film. She does have scenes with Kareena Kapoor and Arjun Rampal. She finds Kareena a great girl. Shilpi was working with her for the first time and Kareena is a star. Shilpi had always admired her and found her extremely beautiful, quite chilled out and comfortable to work with. Shilpi has noticed that Kareena says hello and she smiles, she does her job and leaves. Heroine is a very important film in Shilpi's career so she wants a quality film after this. She can't do anything below this now.
Kareena Kapoor will prove to be tough competition to Vidya Balan who gave her boldest performance in Dirty Picture. Kareena is all set to surprise her audience with bold performances in her forthcoming film Heroine. The actress has no inhibitions doing bold scenes onscreen. Reportedly, the actress has shot a hot bed scene with costar Arjun Rampal for Madhur Bhandarkar's Heroine. The steamy scene has been leaked on youtube recently.
There's no doubt Kareena is one of the best talents in Bollywood, but it seems the actress is all set to experiment her versatility and go that extra mile by doing that which is uncommon.
Sanjay Gagnani will soon make a transition from the small screen to the big one. Sanjay Gagnani is all set to be the newest entrant in the list of TV stars debuting in Bollywood. And what makes this buzz even more special is the fact that Gagnani will step into B-town with Madhur Bhandarkar's Heroine. And guess what, this gave Gagnani a chance to live his dream of sharing screen space with one of the most coveted actors of B-town, Kareena Kapoor. He found it great working for the movie, and sharing screen space with Arjun (Rampal) also. Though it's a cameo, for him it's a great opportunity to work with one of the coolest and best directors in Bollywood, Madhur Bhandarkar.
Thus in Heroine, Kareena's character, Mahi Arora, is a modern, real character and has no shades of anyone. In true blue Bhandarkar style the film is expected to reveal the darker side of the film industry and its well kept secrets. Kareena has done complete justice to the item song Halkat Jawani. Madhur has given entertaining yet credible women-centric films with Chandni Bar, Page 3 and Fashion in the past. Let's hope he lives up to his name with his latest offering.
