Should there be more women in jobs?
An international report finds different countries' GDP growing exponentially if female employment rates match those of men. India's GDP would skyrocket by approximately 27%, finds the Booz and Company report, if an equal number of Indian women joined the workforce.
Women's employment thus offers dual benefits - it realizes a tremendous human resource and strengthens a nation's economy.
To realistically enable women taking jobs, governments must help in every way possible. Women must have access to education and training in a big way.
It is common sense and proven by other countries experience that participation of women in economic activities of all kind from blue collar to white one, from low tech to high tech contributes to higher productivity of the society as a whole because of more numerous working hands and minds.
In India, remedial measures are urgently needed so that our women can take more jobs and come up to contribute to the rapid growth of our economy. It is also imperative that the workplace be made more safe and secure for women so that they feel comfortable when working.
Things are undoubtedly changing in India. There are indeed a large number of highly qualified women available in our country and they are taking their profession seriously.
Women's empowerment in the form of increased employment for women in all types of work places has been seen as contributing to higher levels of GDP growth in all countries including the developing ones.
Lack of employment opportunities is the main reason for ladies remaining unemployed: Non-empowerment is not. The aspect of “the 'care economy' revolving around children, the sick and elderly whom women are often expected to handle full-time” is easily and generally solved by employing aayas (maid servants) and other domestic help. For instance, many working Indian American couples invite their parents to live with them, as is known by all, to take care of their infants.
Those women who are working in a big corporate at important posts are considered a considerable asset by their corporates.
There is nothing wrong in women getting employed in a big way. Women at the place of work will not only prove to be monetarily profitable for women but also men around them will emotionally benefit. Hence more women in jobs is a great idea.
