Walkathon conducted by SIES College of Nerul

NERUL: The Sports Committee of SIES (Nerul) College of Arts, Science and Commerce organized their first walkathon on Friday, 12 September 2014. This event was organized in association with the NSS Unit of SIES Nerul which coordinated with the Nerul Police Station and Traffic Police.

The event was sponsored by the Udaan foundation, a Sports NGO that is in the process of promoting various sports in India. The main chief guest of the event was Dr Sandeep Patil, the President of Udaan foundation and Chinmay Chavan, the Director of the Udaan foundation. The Walkathon was conducted with one purpose, that is, to spread awareness among the people about the misuse of drugs.

 The reporting time of the event was 7 am. The participants then registered themselves for the walkathon and were told to assemble in the college quadrangle. The event started with the introduction of the chief guests who were felicitated by the College faculty. Dr. Sandeep Patil, the President of the foundation waived the flag and declared the walkathon open. Around 400 students who had registered themselves for the walkathon and set off on a route starting from the College quadrangle passing by the SBI Colony, Nerul further proceeding through the DY Patil service road, finally ending at the College Lawn covering a total of 4 kms. During the course of the walkathon, six checkpoints were set up at different locations. There were NSS volunteers present throughout the route and the checkpoints. 

The event ended when all the students had reached the college around 9.30 am. 10 girls and boys who first reached the college were then felicitated in the presence of the Chief Guest and were given certificates as a token of appreciation while the Top 3 winners were awarded with an additional trophy. A closing ceremony was conducted in which the Chief Guests thanked the faculty of the college, as also felicitating Mrs. Cassie Lopez and Mrs. Rajshri Shinde, who took active part in the Walkathon and successfully completed it. They went on to appreciate the efforts of the Sports coordinator Professor R. Perumal, Mr. Vijay Tandlekar, the Sports in charge, Sports secretary Pratik Karkera of TYBCOM( Banking and Insurance) and the Sports Joint Secretary Prashun Shetty of TYBCOM (Financial Markets). Mr. M. Nambiar, the Registrar of the College conveyed the Vote of Thanks and praised the efforts taken by the Sports Committee in association with the NSS Unit of the College due to which the event was a grand success.
