Panvel
terminus will give boost to the city
By Dinesh Kamath
NAVI MUMBAI: The City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO)
wants the Railways to develop Panvel terminus in one stretch rather than two
phases.
The
plot chosen for the first phase of development of Panvel terminus is already
encroached by many shanties. The plot marked for the second phase is however
not encroached on.
CIDCO
has promised to rehabilitate all the project affected and hence the Railways
are free to proceed with the development work.
Panvel
station have lakhs of passengers occupying it during peak hours and with the
population rising day by day it is obvious that in a few years time the station
will be still more crowded.
The
construction of Panvel Terminus is bound to convert Panvel station from a place
that caters to suburban and a few outstation trains into a major hub.
The
reason for coming up with the idea of developing Panvel Terminus was
overcongestion of CST and Lokmanya Tilak Terminus. In order to decongest these
two Terminuses, it was proposed that Panvel station to would be converted into
a Terminus.
The
project was affected at one time due to encroachments by slum dwellers on the
land meant for terminus. These people who have encroached on this land are now
demanding that they be rehabilitated before the work or project resumes.
But
there is no doubt about the fact that once the work on Panvel Terminus is over,
not only the whole of Panvel region but the entire city of Navi Mumbai will have a new look.
