Kudos to Djokovic and Serena!
Novak Djokovic did
wonders at Wimbledon 2015 by winning his third title and ninth Grand Slam and
thus surpassing Andre Agassi, Ivan Lendl, Jimmy Connors and Ken Rosewall. He is
just two short of the 11 won by Bjorn Borg and Rod Laver.
In the final, he
and Roger Federer were locked in two extraordinarily tight sets, before
Djokovic stamped his dominance on the match and won in four. What the tall Serb has in full measure is a
complete all-round game — anchored by a first-rate serve and an outstanding
return of serve — that he uses to remarkable effect
This Wimbledon, on
the women’s side, Serena Williams won her 21st Grand Slam when she defeated
dark horse Garbine Muguruza in straight sets. She remains just short of Steffi
Graf (22nd). The truth is Margaret
Court has won as many as 24 Grand Slam singles titles but she had created this
record during the days of amateurs.
Williams has
redefined the meaning of power in the women’s game — no one has served the ball
as consistently hard as she has and very few have the power to out-hit her.
While Serena
Williams has redefined the importance of big serves and powerful ground strokes
in the women's segment, Novak has consistently been on the top of his game, be
it his ground strokes or his sublime return percentage or his 1st serve.
Defeating a refurbished Federer, arguably the greatest tennis player of the
open era, in his favourite courtyard was not that easy but yet he won
convincingly.
Kudos to Djokovic
and Serena! Both of them are hard workers and their never give up attitude
takes them to the higher echelons. With
the form she is in now, Serena shows promise of going past even Court's 24
grand slams in the near future and it will not be surprising if she goes on to
become the greatest tennis player of all time.
