Let
rational outlook replace tradition
The animal rights activists are campaigning
against jallikattu, They cannot tolerate cruelty to the bulls.
The bull-taming event, puts both
spectators and participants at risk. There
is a case of two onlookers having died in the space of two days in the
jallikattu events in Tamil Nadu Two
others were killed in the manjuvirattu (a variant of jallikattu).
Jallikattu has become a disorderly spectacle. The
Animal Welfare Board of India had hit out against the
organising of jallikattu events. Tamil Nadu authorities have been wary of condemning bull-taming during Pongal.
They now speak the language of custom
and tradition,
The Supreme Court had banned jallikattu. Following
public protests and political pressure, and on the strength of hurriedly
drafted legislation, jallikattu is now back on the Pongal calendar.
In Maharashtra, there is a traditional day
known as "Pola", which is the day for the worship of bulls as a sign
of gratitude towards them, as bulls used to work tirelessly in the farmer's
field throughout the year, and they are very helpful in agriculture in rural
areas. Nowadays, tractors are replacing traditional Bullock-carts, and
participation of bullocks is reduced as compared to older days. But, still
bulls are an important part of agriculture in Maharashtra. Hence, bulls are
treated with care and affection in Maharashtra. Such cruelty as has been seen
in "Jallikattu", is unheard of.
'Tradition' cannot always be legit. Considering
the grave consequences, the so-called 'Tradition' needs to be rectified on a
rational basis. . In any such sport, loss of life is
inevitable. Banning the sport is the
only solution.
The government refers to
medieval times in the name of protecting tradition. It is trying to protect its vote-base, It's a major concern that when everyone is seeking to protect tradition
at any cost and the party in power will not have courage to challenge these
elements, who will bring a change, a more rational outlook in life?
