Dinesh Kamath's Editorial 'Disabled persons should get proper justice' that was published in Newsband

Disabled persons should get proper justice
The government should correctly deal with the rights of persons with disabilities and seek to provide them equal opportunities. The implementation of measures conferring rights on the people with disabilities is still far from adequate. This is in spite of statutory reservation in jobs and other measures formulated with great care.
The court directed that vacancies among posts identified for the disabled must be filled through reservation, regardless of the mode of recruitment — be it promotion or direct recruitment. The ruling has significantly enhanced the scope for the disabled to gain employment in the higher echelons.
Before making laws or implementing them what is more necessary is to bring social awareness among the public in India. It is disheartening that some TV shows and movie show no respect for disability. Instead it a source of humour for them. Most people think that other person's disability is not their concern.
Society and governments have undermined 'disabled' persons' ability to cope up with high profile jobs. While it is true that 'differently' abled persons need extra support to accomplish complicated tasks, the notion that their ability to complete effectively is unfounded. If the government is sincere in recruitment of disabled persons, they can as well appoint assistants to help in reading and writing. This would even reduce unemployment to some extent.
But then, in a country where normal and even people with higher brain-power do not seem to get appropriate attention and Constitutional rights empowerment in full, what can we expect for the unfortunate disabled, other than some step motherly treatments. This is no way to support those who have various disabilities, and who also have Equal Rights to live and enjoy the benefits of our GDP
A normal person has no understanding of the pains and traumas of the disabled. To some extent, he/she will understand it if any of his family member is a disabled person. If there is an able person in the lower ranks, why should he not be promoted? The disabled do not require sympathy. Give them what is due to them under the laws of the land. They need to be treated on par with others and they do not need sympathy.

It is unfortunate that the laws pertaining to disabled peoples' right is implemented in a biased mode. The government's indifferent attitude towards materialising the rights of the disabled in jobs is to be censured since they suffer in spite of apt law being put into force. We must change our mindset about disabled and bring them up on equal platform.
