Modi’s stand against China should be lauded
Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Summit took place in Qingdao, China on June 10, 2018. Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the signing ceremony. Modi said that any mega connectivity project must respect sovereignty and territorial integrity.
India was the only country in the eight-nation Shanghai Cooperation Organisation which refused to endorse China’s ambitious Belt and Road Initiative for which Beijing has signed pacts with nearly 80 countries and international organisations. Russia, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan have “reaffirming their support for the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI)” of China.
India has been severely critical of the BRI, the pet project of President Xi Jinping, as the $50 billion China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, which is part of the BRI, passes through Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). India says it cannot accept a project that ignores its core concern on sovereignty and territorial integrity.
China had unveiled the BRI in 2013 with an aim to link Southeast Asia, Central Asia, the Gulf region, Africa and Europe with a network of land and sea routes. Actually, the main aim of the project is to expand China’s influence globally. Modi said India’s commitment to connectivity projects is reflected in its involvement in International North South Corridor project, development of the Chabahar port and the Ashgabat agreement. He welcomed the connectivity projects which are sustainable and efficient and which respect territorial integrity and sovereignty of the countries.
Xi was only trying to use India to belittle the US. Our PM is having a very clear stand. While he isn’t opposed to globalization and its related aspects such as BRI, he gave the message loud and clear that same should not be done at the cost of states sovereignty and integrity. China should change the course of that BRI and everything will be OK.
What stops China from changing the direction of that road? After all India has so much to offer. Why China is jeopardizing such economic interest? Anyway, we have a lot of bargaining power now. They will have to yield to our concerns inevitably. If china wants better connectivity between nations, why is it not following same rule in South China sea?
The stand that our PM took is absolutely right as intention of China is suspicious in nature. We always welcome the good international connectivity through road or sea ports but after considering the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the any nation. The bonhomie with the Presidents of China and Russia will not help to cut any ice. First time after a long time, China and Russia together have taken a stand against India.
Modi has made the right decision. He is truly patriotic. The latest example is Malaysia where the former Prime Minister, Najib, had sold the country to China under the pretext of development for the nation. When he, Najib, lost the election, the new government had found holes in all projects which was hidden from the public. This move by the Chinese in their latest ideology is to make nations submissive though outwardly it gives the status of development. Mahathir read it well and quickly ordered for reviews which will bring some form of subtle wrath from the state run companies. We have to see how China is going to handle all the mammoth projects and the unique country within the country it had created in the state of Pahang where Najib's party still rules.
Now it looks like China has chosen to appease India. But Modi could not be fooled and hence he deserves a salute.
