Dinesh Kamath's old article on Shefali Shah that was published in Newsband

Shefali Shah the actress, who is seen in a slim and glamorous avatar in Barnali Ray Shukla's Kuchh Luv Jaisaa, says the 'heroine' in Bollywood is expected to look good and beautiful and this film has helped her explore a new side of her.
"Looking good is part of my job. There is a certain responsibility or expectation from a 'heroine' in Bollywood. She has to be good looking beautiful, desirable, attractive, beautiful, trim, fit, well-dressed, great hair, make-up. This part helped me rediscover this side of me," said Shefali.
People connect Shefali with intense roles and performances, a thinking actress who only does serious work. But there is this side of her which no one has explored. This film has done it. It took someone like Barnali to visualise her as Madhu in the film.
The film revolves around Madhu (Shefali), a housewife, who is thrown together with a stranger, Raghav (Rahul Bose) a criminal, who she thinks is a private detective. With this begins a one-day adventure of the duo and it changes their lives forever.
For the role of a housewife, Shefali had undergone a makeover as part of the story and followed a diet and exercise regime to lose 12 kgs.
She had to do exercising, gyming, eat salad, juice and fruits. She had to maintain a weight of 51-52 kgs for the film. And in real life too, she has decided to ensure that she maintains the mark of at least 53-54 kgs of weight.
Having played mature roles in her career of ten films so far, Shefali admits she ignored herself while focusing on character. The film triggered her to maintain the look and shape in real life too.
Actress Shefali Shah, who went to the extent of meeting an under-trial prisoner in Thane Jail to give authenticity to her role in the film Kucch Luv Jaisaa, discovered that there is a human within every criminal and one can easily connect with that side of their personality. This experience for her was daunting and intimidating, but finally it was like two strangers meeting and communicating at a very human level. It was just like meeting another person in a mall or airport lounge.
From being a TV actress to character artist in films to a full-fledged actress, Shefali has come a long way. In Barnali Ray Shukla's directorial debut Kucch Luv Jaisaa, her character bumps into a criminal (Rahul Bose) on the run and they end up spending a whole day together. The 36-year-old actor wanted to live that situation in real life.
Shefali has lived a protected life. So she wanted to break out of her comfort zone and know someone who is trying to intimidate her. She wanted to put herself in a situation which could be dicey. It started with that thought.
Shefali's performances in Satya and Waqt: The Race Against Time had been highly appreciated. This is her second film with Rahul after Bengali director Aparna Sen's 15 Park Avenue. She found it great working with Rahul since he complemented her. She couldn't imagine anyone else in Rahul's role.
Shefali always wanted to portray a glamorous and sexy role, and her dream has been fulfilled with her husband's film Kucch Love Jaisaa.
Having lost many kilos, she is proving to be a competitor for some of the leading ladies of filmdom in the movie, which sees her play the role of a desperate housewife, who gets bored of her life and falls in love with a criminal played by Rahul.
Shefali's character in Kucch Love Jaisaa doesn't tell one to be rebellious. She believes that more than someone else it is important to have a relationship with yourself. According to her, It is important to love yourself and if you don't love yourself then no one else will love you too. She says that instead of making a lot of time to love others — first we should make time to love our self.
The filmmakers had felt that intelligent, thinking actors could not be glamorous, act sexy or dance, but she has broken this ideology with her latest character. Not only has Shefali shed her shy image in the movie and donned some breathtaking clothes, but she has also done some hot and raunchy scenes.
Though the actress has done some very bold scenes in Kucch Love Jaisaa, she has decided not to do any kissing scene in movies. She has always gone with the demand of her character in the film, and here her role required her to look sexy and glamorous. But the scenes are dealt with deftly. If her children had to see the film she wouldn't be embarrassed and she would be glad that she did the film.
It is true that Shefali spent a day with a criminal in jail to help her play the character of Madhu better. She wanted to know what it felt like to be with a person who completely unnerves and intimidates you, who has a completely different point of view. It is easy to watch television and express shock at the tsunami that happened in Japan, but we will never know what being there when it happened was like because we were not there. It was very daunting, very intimidating, scary, unnerving experience for Shefali but once she interacted with the prisoner, she realized he was just like someone she would interact with in a train.
Shefali had said yes to the script of Kucch Love Jaisa, without much fuss, because of its innovative storyline. She had kept herself away from doing a film after award-winning roles in films like The Last Lear, Gandhi - My Father and Karthik Calling Karthik because finding a script that respected her talent was hard to come by. She had planned to work in a film that would be special. And considering the age bracket she is in, such kind of roles are difficult to come by. Hence she accepted the role gracefully. Shefali is very selective about what to act in.
The actress, however, rues that she wasn't given a chance for some recent roles that she would have played to the hilt. She feels she could have been considered for films like Cheeni Kum, Paa, No One Killed Jessica, Tare Zameen Par and a host of others. But she doesn't know why that never happened.
Shefali says that there was one particular thing in the film she had to do, that she stayed away from doing in real life, and that was driving a car. She drives in almost 60 percent of the scenes in Kucch Luv Jaisaa, and she doesn't really drive in real life. She has a driver's license but doesn't like driving at all.
I'd like to tell you one more thing about Shefali. Till now, Shefali has not been offered any naach-gaana number. But the actor is not giving up hope yet, and is optimistic about getting an item song soon.
B-town is abuzz with Shefali's remarkable physical transformation. With a new film and a new look, Shefali Shah looks all set to put her best foot forward. Good luck, Shefali!
