OPCW
deservedly gets Nobel Peace Prize
The Organisation for the Prohibition of
Chemical Weapons (OPCW) were given the Nobel Peace Prize by the Norwegian Nobel
Committee This will encourage many to help in ridding the world of weapons of
mass destruction.
OPCW has done a commendable job
since it came into being in 1997 as the custodian of the Chemical Weapons
Convention (CWC). As many as 189
countries are party to the CWC’s ban on chemical munitions; under the treaty’s
terms, they are obliged to declare and destroy any stockpiles they possess
within a clear timeframe.
Unlike the Nuclear Non-Proliferation
Treaty, which gives the United States ,
Russia , China , France ,
and Great Britain
special status, the CWC is non-discriminatory.
The U.S.
has sought another decade to destroy its arsenal, while Russia is expected to complete the
process only by 2018. India has complied fully with the treaty,
having eliminated its chemical stockpile four years ago.
OPCW relies both on technical and
diplomatic expertise to fulfill its objectives. But the thing is the countries
having piles of chemical weapon are forcing other country to neutralize their
weapon. In order to keep peace in the world, the leading countries should set
an example by neutralizing their own destructive weapons may it be chemical or
nuke. It is a cruel joke that nations who are masters and have the largest
stockpiles are given exemption of some kind and they continue to have it while
the less powerful are coerced to follow the diktats of the most powerful. It is clear that the OPCW is not free from
being bullied by powerful nations.
Again, the Nobel Peace Committee should
be commended for giving the World’s greatest award to an organization like OPCW
since this will encourage other organizations to do their work more
passionately even though under pressure. The world still has a long way to go
in order to make the organizations like OPCW be able to work freely and in
their full capacity.
