Triangular Contest in Thane Lok
Sabha constituency
By Dinesh Kamath
Rajan Vichare of Sena
Sanjeev Sane of AAP
NAVI MUMBAI: Elections to the Thane Lok Sabha
constituency promises to be a tough battle for the Shiv Sena, the Nationalist Congress
Party and the Aam Aadmi Party. Sitting MP Sanjeev Naik of the NCP in Thane is
being challenged by the Sena's Rajan Vichare and AAP’s Sanjeev Sane.
Thane constituency
includes three municipal corporations - Navi Mumbai, Thane, Mira-Bhayander -
and they boast a diverse voter profile of the Marathi-speaking Agri community,
Brahmins, Muslims, South Indians, Sindhis and North Indians.
While the
Sena-BJP combine is wooing with the slogan of ‘vote for change’, the AAP is
promising the ‘end of corruption’ and the NCP is claiming to have delivered
over the years with the recent cluster redevelopment scheme as the icing on the
cake. The key issues during these elections are bound to be corruption, the
lack of urban planning, inadequate infrastructure and dynasty politics.
In 2009, Naik Jr
had trounced his Sena rival Vijay Choughule, whose defeat is attributed to the
MNS candidate eating into the traditional Sena strongholds.
Sena candidate
Vichare is banking on the Narendra Modi magic and corruption in the NCP to
reach pole position.
The situation
for the NCP is fluid. A repeat victory for his elder son is crucial for
campaign chief Ganesh Naik as it would firm up his control over the region, but
he is battling accusations of corruption and dynasty politics. Recently, he
invited a sharp rap for the illegal construction of a bungalow on a Cidco plot
in Navi Mumbai, where the family, detractors claim, runs the entire civic
administration as a personal fief.
Here are the profiles of the three Lok Sabha
candidates of Thane constituency who will battle with one another for the seat
in the Central Parliament:
