NAVI MUMBAI: After
initiating programs against drug and sexual abuse under the PACT (Prevention of
Abuse of Children & Teens) Project, the Heart Foundation and the Navi
Mumbai Police have decided to work together against Child labour under the RARE
(Rehabilitate, Assure, Restore & Educate) project and they would be
inaugurating the same on 12th June 2015, a day which is celebrated as a World
day against Child Labour.
“Child labour is the practice of having children engaged
in economic activity, on part or full-time basis. The practice deprives
children of their childhood, and is harmful to their physical and mental
development. Poverty, lack of good schools and growth of informal economy are
considered as the important causes of child labour in India” said Dr. Jayakar
Ellis, President, Heart Foundation. “They are exposed to the worst forms of
child labour such as work in hazardous environments, slavery, or other forms of
forced labour, illicit activities such as drug trafficking and prostitution, as
well as involvement in armed conflict. We would be working towards giving them
the right to their childhood on a long term plan involving different schools
and individuals” He added.
Talking to DCP Suresh Mengde, under whom this project is
being executed, he said “This Project is a joint effort with Heart Foundation
and Navi Mumbai Police to address the serious issue of Child Labour and
simultaneously work towards helping in getting these children out of this
modern day slavery. I have also instructed the Social Service Cell to work a
long term project to enable restoration and minimum education where required.”
