NAVI MUMBAI: The
residents of the city have been found throwing away a huge quantity of treated
water into the sea on regular basis. The quantity of water wasted in this
manner is so great that a huge number of poor people are being denied of this
useful water.
There are plants in the city which generate treated water
which the residents of the city make use of and throw away a huge quantity into
the sea. The civic body uses some quantity of this water for plants on road
dividers and in some housing societies, for gardening and cleaning. The rest is
pumped into the Thane creek.
After throwing away the treated water the revenue lost
could be at a tune of crores of rupees which commercial and industrial users
could have raised if the same water was supplied to them.
Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation does have plans to
promote the use of treated water for industries and cold storages along
Trans-Thane corridor. Currently, a very small number of housing societies and
the municipality are using treated water. The civic body might be prepared to
bear the cost for putting water pipeline to circulate this treated water. The
process of making the treated water potable is still more costly.
NMMC has also been offered suggestion to segregate
garbage, convert it into compost and generate energy from the waste. The civic
body seems to be willing to follow that suggestion.
