Kahaani 2
Kahaani 2: Durga Rani Singh (or simply Kahaani 2,
English: Story 2) is a 2016 Indian thriller film directed by Sujoy Ghosh and
produced by Ghosh and Jayantilal Gada. It features Arjun Rampal and Vidya Balan
in lead roles. It is not a sequel of the 2012 film Kahaani but next installment
from same brand.
The story of Kahaani 2 revolves around a single
mother, whose daughter has been kidnapped by some anonymous person. In her
quest to get her daughter back, past must be dug out. This story is completely
new, so the mysterious element is different. Though, it's a completely
different story, different world and characters, yet that essence of Kahaani
remains in this film as well and the mystery is retained. The movie leaves you
thinking what will happen next? Durga Rani Singh really belongs in the grey.
She looks very simple and unassuming. But in reality, she is street smart and
extremely intelligent. Although, she knows what is happening around her, she
doesn't care about the world. She wants to stay aloof, but then something
happens and her entire life turns 360 degrees. Vidya Balan has two faces in the
film - Vidya Sinha and Durga Rani Singh. But who has done what, is what the
mystery is all about in Kahaani 2. Director Sujoy Ghosh draws us into the
ordinary lives of Vidya Sinha (Vidya Balan) and her daughter, Mini, and turns
their world upside down. In a matter of minutes you are invested in their lives
and the sheer pace of the events that follow leaves you breathless, in a good
way. It’s one of the rare films that tackle a sensitive subject with gumption
and grace. There is a scene in which a dowdy Balan confronts the perpetrator
and his allies who are complicit in the cover-up of an unspeakable crime. The
Indian National Award-winning actress, who plays a mother on the run who is
accused of murdering and kidnapping of a minor, puts in a compelling
performance. Her fear, her angst and her protectiveness towards her daughter is
beautifully captured. While there’s no doubt in a viewer’s mind about her
innocence, it’s wonderful that Balan has the charisma and the gravitas to keep
everyone hooked until the last second. Some of the twists in the second half
may seem predictable, but it’s buoyed by some fantastic performances. Arjun
Rampal as a middle-level police officer is thoroughly engaging. He’s on Balan’s
trail, and his quest to find the truth about her past is played out handsomely.
But there’s a coincidence in the film that’s hard to believe. The movie focuses
on the middle-class milieu of West Bengal.
The film has Vidya Balan as Vidya Sinha/ Durga Rani
Singh, Arjun Rampal as Sub-inspector Inderjeet Singh, Naisha Khanna as Minnie, Jugal
Hansraj, Tota Roychoudhury, Kharaj Mukherjee, Kaushik Sen and Manini Chadha.
The music of this film has been composed by Clinton
Cerejo. The movie has songs like "Mehram" and "Aaur Main Khush
Hoon".
