Begum Jaan
Begum Jaan is an Indian Hindi period drama film,
it is written and directed by National Film Award-winning director Srijit
Mukherji and produced by Mukesh Bhatt, Vishesh Bhatt and Play Entertainment.
The film is co-produced by Sakshi Bhatt and Shree Venkatesh Films with
executive producer Kumkum Saigal. The cinematography is done by Gopi Bhagat.
Lyrics, Additional screenplay and dialogues have been penned by Kausar Munir
and Rahat Indori. Vidya Balan plays the lead role of a brothel's madam, set in
the backdrop of late Indian Independence period of 1948. It is Hindi remake of
the Bengali film Rajkahini (2015). Begum Jaan is loosely based on Shyam
Benegal's 1986 movie "Mandi".
The movie narrates the story of eleven
prostitutes who refuse to part ways with their brothel and each other during
the partition between India and Pakistan. On the eve of Independence, the
chairman of the Border Commission, Sir Cyril Radcliffe decides to divide India
and Pakistan into equitable halves. What the administration doesn’t account for
is the line running through the middle of Begum Jaan’s (Vidya Balan) brothel
situated plonk on the border; with one half falling in India and the other in
Pakistan. It’s a good period and story to revisit 70-years after Partition. The
narrative deals less with the horror of the divide and serves more as an ode to
the spiritedness of Begum; widowed in her childhood and sold to a brothel. Coming
back to our protagonist – kings, administrators and commoners are hooked onto
the pleasures provided by her girls, so Begum with her guile manages to rule.
Till Radcliffe draws the Lakshman-Rekha. Begum’s spunk is infectious though.
She resembles a Bengal tigress whether she is defending her body or boundaries.
The film has Vidya Balan as Begum Jaan, Ila Arun
as Amma, Gauahar Khan as Rubina, Pallavi Sharda as Gulabo, Priyanka Setia as
Jameela, Ridheema Tiwary as Amba, Flora Saini as Maina, Raviza Chauhan as Lata,
