EVMs save money and manpower
EVMs may not be perfect
but they are better than the ballot paper system. The use of electronic voting
machines (EVMs) should continue. The country should not revert to paper ballots. This issue has made a comeback after the
results of the assembly elections held in five states earlier this year. The call for paper ballots cane from Congress
and AAP.
To say that EVMs are
absolutely and completely tamper-proof may not be entirely accurate, but they
have saved the country millions by reducing the
amount of manpower needed in the old system.
After interventions by
the courts, EVMs are now being made to contain a voter-verifiable paper audit
trail (VVPAT). This is a good attempt to make the system
harder to tamper with.
During the days of paper
ballots there was an issue of booth capturing and fake ballots. EVMs are good
replacement for paper ballots. It is the right technology if used with paper
trail after which there will not be issues of manipulation at all. The losers
will always cry foul whatever technology is used.
It is wrong information
that EVM is a flawed technology and not used in USA, Japan, Germany, Britain.
In fact, many states in US use EVMs. Second, the rule of law cannot be compared
in India with those developed/educated countries. Compared to population of
Germany, Britain, the police and manpower required to safeguard the elections in
India is enormous.
Indian democracy is doing
just fine. It's just that losers have started whining and EVMs are a convenient
excuse. Hacking of EVM is something that is only alleged but could not be
proved. Let those people come out, who have uploaded thousands of videos in
YouTube showing how an EVM can be hacked. Let them perform in front of
everyone.
If EC is confident that
EVMs cannot be tampered, they EC should give an open challenge to people who
don’t agree to demonstrate that they could hack EVMs.
