Vehicle owners and policemen blame each other for vehicle-thefts
By Dinesh Kamath

NAVI MUMBAI: This year, it was noticed that the number of vehicle theft incidents have decreased considerably as compared to last year. Not that all the vehicle theft cases registered so far have been solved. Navi Mumbai police have not succeeded in solving all the cases.
Last year, although vehicle theft cases were more the detection rate was high. Comparatively, the vehicle theft cases this year are less, but the detection rate is low.
The stolen vehicles are worth crores of rupees and hence for the victims whose cars are stolen, it is a heavy loss. Only some victims, whose vehicles the police manage to recover, proved to be lucky. The other victims have to bear the heavy loss.
Most vehicles last year were stolen in Kalamboli but comparatively the same region had very less number of vehicle-thefts having taken place this year. Surprisingly, it is Panvel region that has experienced most number of vehicle-theft crimes this year.
The vehicle owners whose vehicles are stolen blame the policemen for not doing proper detection works. They blame the police for failing to help them recover their vehicles. They also blame the cops for not making proper security arrangements to prevent vehicles from getting stolen.
But the policemen defend themselves by saying that these vehicle owners in spite of being repeatedly told not to park their vehicles on roads, especially at night, continue with the practice of parking their cars or mo-bikes on the roads.
“Why can’t they park their vehicles inside their society which provides them garage facility?” questioned one policeman. Another thing is in this age of technology, there is available in the market facilities like alarm system that can be installed in the vehicles for the owners to become alert the moment any thief makes an attempt to steal the car. “But these careless vehicle owners don’t even bother to fix an alarm system to their vehicles. And when their vehicles are stolen they come to the police station and raise a hue and cry. They expect the policemen to perform miracles and help them recover their stolen property immediately. How can policemen do their duties perfectly without the cooperation of the public?” said the same policeman.

“Nowadays, there are also anti-vehicle theft devices available in the market, which send text message, in case anyone tries to steal the vehicles or their parts. These vehicle owners are well aware of all these latest technologies but yet they show negligence in getting them installed and when they lose their vehicles they blame the police,”he added.
