NAVI MUMBAI: Navi Mumbai police are trying their best to control the number of crime and accidents in the city. Sometimes they are able to lessen the number considerably but there are times when they are just not able to control the mishaps or criminal activities. These policemen had a tough time during rainy season when in spite of all their efforts many mishaps involving cars and trucks just could not be prevented. Cars which met with accidents were more in number and they were followed by trucks, two-wheelers and tempos.
The Traffic Department of Navi Mumbai has come up with an appeal to motorists in particular to take utmost care while driving particularly during rainy season. Careful driving will save not only their lives but also the pedestrians will be saved from injuries or deaths. The motorists were also issued warning not to drink and drive especially during the rains since it is found that many cars which met with accidents were driven by drunk drivers. Some cars lost their control owing to attempt made by the drivers to overtake another vehicle. There were cars which were being driver with full speed in spite of heavy rains and they crashed. These accidents occurred in spite of use of speedguns by the traffic police to check racing vehicles. The tempos stand the risk of meeting with accidents when they are carrying load more than permitted amount. So the traffic department has time and again come up with the appeal that trucks and tempos should not be overloaded to avoid accidents.
Normally the bikers meet with more accidents than motorists during rainy season but surprisingly this time the cars top the list of vehicles that met with accident during monsoon. The bikers, in fact, were found to be last in the list.
As far as crime is concerned, the policemen focused a lot on missing kids. This has resulted in considerable reduction in the number of missing or kidnapped children in the past couple of years. It was the rise in cases of missing kids that had led the police to apply most of their focus on this kind of crime. This move on the part of Navi Mumbai police proved to be a big success. The city police would like to continue giving priority to such crimes by creating more media awareness and making the public alert. As per Supreme Court verdict, there is no difference between missing child case and a case of kidnapping.
The extra focus applied by policemen on kidnapping cases not only helped to prevent many such incidents from occurring but also led to the tracing of quite many kids who could not be prevented from being abducted. The launching of ‘Operation Muskaan’ was an effort in the direction of solving kidnapping cases and this operation led to many kidnapped children getting reunited with their families – thanks to excellent detection works by the city police force. The sad thing is that there are few abduction cases which are not yet solved but as compared to the past years, this year the abduction cases detected are much, much more. Navi Mumbai policemen, many a times, coordinated with police force of neighbouring places, and sometimes far-away regions too, to trace the missing minor children and this fetched them success in most of the cases. Here the credit should particularly go to anti-trafficking unit who spread their nets far and wide to trap the kidnappers. Non Government Organisations or NGOs are also coming up nowadays and applying their total focus on tracing of missing kids and nabbing of begging mafia and prostitution rings since the members of these organizations have seen the pathetic conditions of the parents of those children who go missing. These NGOs are the witnesses to the way the minors are exploited by the abductors. Some NGOs have come up with helplines to enable the members of public to contact them on spotting a missing child anywhere in or outside the city. These NGOs are working hand in hand with police department to prevent such crimes. Children’s Rehabilitation Homes have minors and juveniles being admitted at their Centres every now and then and these young ones are most of the time found to be those missing ones whom their parents, policemen and NGOs have been searching for.

Another crime that concerns many activists as well as police department is one relating to illegal constructions. Here Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation and City and Industrial Development Corporation will have to buck up and with the help of police department and NGOs should put a total stop or minimize such illegal constructions that are taking place in the city. Just issuing orders or appealing to the illegal builders are not enough. There is urgent need to take stern action against such happenings. A few days back CIDCO did start with a campaign of demolishing all illegal structures and this had taken illegal builders by total surprise. CIDCO managed to perform this feat owing to the orders they had got from the court. NMMC is also doing its bit of carrying out survey, sending notices and even going about razing illegal structures the moment they are equipped with court orders. Thus this is a good sign since constructive action against illegal builders is indeed being taken in a way it was never done before and it will not be surprising if in the near future the cases of illegal constructions will be less in number considerably.
