NMMC needs to hurry up with cleaning up of lakes before Ganesh Festival starts
By Dinesh Kamath

NAVI MUMBAI: Ganesh Festival is all set to begin but the city is still not in a proper condition in spite of corporators and residents having appealed time and again to the authority to do take all the necessary steps to ensure that no problem will arise during Ganesh Festival.
The lakes in which the Ganesh Idols are immersed need to be cleaned and desilted. After the immersion of hundreds of Ganesh idols, these lakes should not get filled with the remains of idols with stinking garbage floating on the surface. To prevent such happening the civic officials will have to take drastic steps and that too at the earliest.
Once these lakes are cleaned the civic authorities should deploy security guards or hire caretaker to ensure that the lake is not made dirty again. The guards should be continued to be deployed there till the Ganesh immersion takes place to ensure that there is not a single accident that takes place at any lake in the city.

Both the solid waste management department and engineering department of Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation should join hands to clean up all the lakes and prevent desilting by using the most modern and latest technologies. Once the festival is over NMMC should focus on maintaining the beauty of the all the lakes the beautification of which it had done by spending around few lakhs of rupees.
