Consider
problems of common people and farmers too
The Economic
Survey presented by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley reaffirms the positive growth
numbers that have been projected by many global agencies, including the
International Monetary Fund. It shows the
business-friendly side of the BJP-led NDA government with a reform-oriented
road map. The Survey indicates the possibility of India posting 7-plus per cent
GDP (gross domestic product) growth for the third year in a row.
But one can’t
deny that conditions do exist for raising the economy’s growth momentum to 8 per
cent or more in the next couple of years. A robust expansion
in the service sector, accelerated growth in industry and a pick-up in Index of
Industrial Production are urgently needed. There also should be a big push to
agriculture, health and education.
Agrarian sector
is the backbone of our economy which has not been focused in this survey.
Around 60 percent population of nation is dependent on farming and they are
affected by irregular monsoon and seasonal changes, and hence increase in
growth rate at the cost of compromising with needs of farmers will not depict
holistic development. Economy must be reform-oriented which covers all aspects
of basic human needs, and cohesive development of other sectors altogether.
But downtrodden
section are not interested in financial jargon made by the finance minister. All
they are interested in is the control in inflation on essential commodities. It
is high time the government gave serious thought to Inflation. Because today it
has become the biggest problem of our country.
First the government
should have control over the price of agriculture commodity, regulate the
agriculture marketing, assure fair price to farmers for their product, improve
the storage capacity and infrastructure before thinking of imposing tax on the
farmers.
