Newsband completes 12 years
The daily newspaper ‘Newsband’ completed 12 years on 30 April 2019. On 1
May 2019, Newsband will be celebrating its 12th anniversary in a
grand way.
The sister publication of Newsband is the Marathi daily newspaper ‘Aaple
Nave Shahar’. There are times when many people tend to compare the English
newspaper with Marathi or other vernacular language newspaper. The question
they normally ask is why Marathi newspaper is read by many while the English
newspaper is just read by the selected few.
The answer to this question is simple. Marathi newspaper is read by Mass
while English newspaper is read by Class. Class is just a minority. Class is
just a small group of Elites. Mass is a huge number of common people. In a
place like Maharashtra, English is the language of the Elites and Marathi is
the language of the Mass. Hence the English newspaper caters to a small group
of Elites while the Marathi newspaper appeals to a huge Mass of people.
The question next asked is why a big part of Masses don’t understand
English, while the few Elites are very conversant with English Language. The
answer is simple. English is an expensive language. Hence just a selected
number of Elites can afford English Education. The Masses have to be content in
pursuing education in vernacular languages which is cheap and hence they can
afford. The reason why the cost of English education cannot be made as cheap as
education in vernacular languages is the availability of very small number of
English teachers who demand very high salary while the vernacular teachers are
available in huge number and owing to tough competition they have to settle for
low salary.
So these are the reasons why English newspapers are read by few while the
Marathi newspapers are read by many. The only way to do justice to English
newspaper by way of profit is to make it sell at many times more price than a
vernacular newspaper. Only then will English newspaper start making as much
profit as Marathi newspaper.
