Movie World
Who will play the lead role in ‘Mogul’?
By Dinesh Kamath

There have been as many as five instances in the recent past when Bollywood filmmakers announced the lead cast of their film but then had to replace them with someone else, or are still searching for one. Talking about getting replaced by someone else in the Bollywood movies, in the past, Shah Rukh Khan had replaced Armaan Kohli in Deewana and the likes of Aamir Khan and Ajay Devgn in Darr. Both the movies went down in history to become Shah Rukh Khan's most memorable roles.
Bhushan Kumar proudly presented and introduced Akshay Kumar in the biopic of his father, music mogul Bhushan Kumar. T-Series unveiled the first look poster (a silhouette) along with the announcement which took place around March 17, 2017. Things however turned ugly exactly a year later i.e. around March 2018 and Akshay walked out of the film citing creative differences with director Subhash Kapoor. Two months later in May, superstar Aamir Khan became co-producer on the project and ever since, media has been abuzz that he might act in the movie too. Aamir has clearly denied the possibility of that. But Aamir Khan had backed out of Mogul after #MeToo allegations were levied on the director Subhash Kapoor. Kapoor however received a clean chit and now Aamir Khan is back with the project.
While some reports assume that Akshay Kumar might be back on the project, others believe that Aamir Khan would play the titular role. It however looks unlikely that either of the two would play the lead role. Aamir, when celebrating 30 years in Bollywood with the media, had cleared that he would not be acting in the film.
After Akshay Kumar’s exit, Bhushan has been trying his level best to convince Aamir Khan to play Gulshan Kumar but with little luck. There are many controversial areas of Gulshan Kumar’s life that Aamir doesn’t want to get into. Bhushan said It’s an important and an emotional film and that is why it is taking time. They want to make it the best. He is not in a hurry for it because it is not a commercial film. According to him, the chosen actor definitely needs seven-eight months to adapt into it. The film will start somewhere in 2020.
T-Series head honcho also clarfied that things are positive with Akshay Kumar and that they are working on two-three films with and that whatever miscommunication was there has also gotten cleared, everything is in a positive space now.
Bhushan Kumar said the lead actor of Mogul will he announced in July, and the team is looking at a 2021 release.
Producer Bhushan Kumar revealed that his father Gulshan Kumar’s biopic Mogul, which underwent multiple delays owing to changes in the cast, has found its protagonist and will go on floors next year.
Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan has been given the tag of Mr Perfectionist. The 54-year-old actor does everything judiciously and pays attention to every small detail. Now, Aamir Khan will be co-producing ‘Mogul’.
Ever since the project was conceptualized, the two big names including Aamir Khan and Akshay Kumar, were doing the rounds.
Aamir Khan has not done any film since his last movie Thugs of Hindostan. Since its debacle, he was busy in some of his non-conventional ventures, but now there is big news coming out that the actor is all set to play the music magnet Gulshan Kumar on the silver screen, which will be co-produced by his son of T-Series.
It’s been a game of musical chairs at the helm of ‘Mogul’. After a grand announcement that Akshay Kumar will bring alive the story of late music baron Gulshan Kumar on the big screen, the actor walked out of the film due to differences over the script. Gulshan Kumar's son and T-Series head honcho Bhushan Kumar was miffed with Akshay for leaving the project in the lurch. He vowed to bring a star "bigger than Akshay Kumar" on board. However, Akshay feels that no one else can do justice to the role. When the actor was asked during a promotional event who would best suit the role after his exit, he told reporters, "I don't think anybody besides me."
Next it was being said that Ranbir Kapoor has been approached for Mogul. Apparently, the makers feel that his stellar acting chops and popularity make him the perfect choice for the role. However, there was no official confirmation about the same.
Meanwhile, Akshay was gearing up for the release of Gold, in which he plays the Indian hockey coach Tapan Das. Gold, directed by Reema Kagti, traces the journey of Tapan Das (played by Akshay) an assistant manager, who dreams to get a gold medal for the then newly-independent India. The film is based on true events about India winning its first Olympic gold medal in hockey as a free nation in 1948. Produced by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani, the movie also stars Kunal Kapoor, Amit Sadh and Vineet Kumar Singh in pivotal roles, and marks the Bollywood debut of television queen Mouni Roy.
After Gold, Akshay will be seen in Housefull 4, filming of which has started. The actor will next begin shooting for Dharma Productions’ Good News, which also stars Kareena Kapoor, Diljit Dosanjh and Kiara Advani. The surrogacy drama will be directed by debutant Raj Mehta, who was an assistant director on Dharma’s Kapoor & Sons and Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania.
At one stage it was confirmed that Akshay is no longer a part of Mogul. The actor has returned the signing amount, and reports suggested that Bhushan was in no mood to forgive him for leaving the film in the lurch.
We all know that Akshay not only enjoys a huge fan following, he also has the image of a national icon. His playing Gulshan would mean that the biopic acquired respectability among audiences and in the market. Bhushan was mighty miffed with Akshay and had issued an open challenge (or at least that is how some people are viewing it) to him by promising to bring a 'bigger' star on board.
After that the T-Series head was wooing Aamir Khan and Salman Khan, who he shares a great camaraderie with, to be a part of Mogul. Bhushan had asked Aamir to produce the film along with him and possibly get Salman to play the lead. Bhushan had built a great rapport with Salman over the past many years and they were waiting for the formalities to be completed.
As per the information in the Wikipedia: Mogul is helmed by Subhash Kapoor and co-produced by Bhushan Kumar and Aamir Khan. We are excited to see who plays the Mogul in the biopic. Mogul is an upcoming 2019 Indian biographical film. It is directed by Eeshwar Nivas and produced by Bhushan Kumar of T-Series. The film follows the life of the mogul Gulshan Kumar who was founder of the T-Series music label (Super Cassettes Industries Ltd.), and a Bollywood film producer. The film is set to release during Christmas 2019. The film has Aamir Khan as Gulshan Kumar, ulshan Grover as Dawood Ibrahim, Mouni Roy as Sudesh Kumari Dua, Vikram Gokhale as Chandrabushan Kumar Dua, Faisal Khan as Krishan Kumar, Divya Dutta as Tanya Singh, Aadar Jain as Bhushan Kumar, Amit Sial as Nadeem Saifi, Neeraj Kabi as Shravan Rathod, Sanjay Kapoor as Mahesh Bhatt, Dhariya Karwa as Rahul Roy, Sahher Bambba as Anu Aggarwal, Paresh Pahuja as Deepak Tijori, Darshan Kumar as Sajid Nadiadwala, Amruta Subhash as Aruna Irani, Anya Singh as Shilpa Shirodkar, Shakti Kapoor as himself and Kiran Kumar as himself. The film initially starred Aamir Khan as Kumar. In October 2018, amid molestation allegations against Subhash Kapoor, Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao who were the co-producers of the film decided to quit the project. Producer Bhushan Kumar then dropped Kapoor from the project. Then, ultimately Khan agreed to do film.
So that’s how it stands today. We will have to wait and see as to ultimately who will play the lead role in ‘Mogul’.
