Ranveer and Deepika to play Kapil and Romi respectively in the movie 83
By Dinesh Kamath
Deepika Padukone will be playing
Ranveer Singh's wife in movie 83. Deepika Padukone has confirmed this. Kabir
Khan is the director of the venture 83. Deepika Padukone even went to the
extent of saying that even if there was someone else essaying the role of
legendary cricketer Kapil Dev, she would still play his wife Romi Bhatia. 83
will be her first film with Ranveer Singh post marriage
Thus Deepika Padukone is all set to
share screen space with Ranveer Singh in the upcoming sports drama, '83. The
movie will mark their first collaboration post marriage.
On the sets of their film Goliyon
Ki Rasleela Ram-Leela, Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone's romance brewed.
After dating each other for six years, the duo tied the knot in November 2018
in an intimate ceremony. Ever since their fairytale wedding which took place at
Italy's Lake Como, fans have been eagerly waiting to see the duo share screen
space again. And now, the wait is finally over as Ranveer and Deepika will be
starring together in Kabir Khan's upcoming directorial, '83.
In the movie, Ranveer will be
playing former Indian skipper Kapil Dev and has been prepping for the same for
quite some time now. On the other hand, Deepika, who recently wrapped up her
first production venture, Chhapaak, will be seen playing the legendary
cricketer’s wife Romi Bhatia.
The dynamics between her and
Ranveer will not change because when you are in the business of movies, you are
playing a character. All you try to do is, be honest in that moment. The
personal equation doesn’t spill over into the workspace. Deepika is confident
that Ranveer will do justice to the role of Kapil Dev.
Apart from acting in it, Deepika will also be
co-producing '83. The sports drama will hit the screens on April 10 next year.
Talking about Deepika's next film
Chhapaak, it is based on the life of acid attack survivor Laxmi Aggarwal and
has been directed by Meghna Gulzar. Ranveer, on the other hand, will also be
starring in Karan Johar's Takht and first-timer Divyang Thakkar's Jayeshbhai
Jordaar.
Kapil Dev and Romi had attended
Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh’s wedding reception in November.
Kabir Khan came to Deepika with the
script. This happened a couple of months ago, when he was still casting the
boys for the film. It’s just that Deepika was busy with Chhapaak (her
production debut, which wrapped up recently) and she was waiting for the right
moment to make the announcement.
Based on India’s cricket World Cup
win in England in 1983, the film will be Deepika and Ranveer’s first
collaboration since 2018’s superhit Padmaavat and their wedding in November.
Talking about Romi, very little is
known about her. Deepika’s family has been friends with the Devs for years. There
isn’t a lot of material available on her. Deepika has met her a few times,
including their wedding reception, and she has interacted with her socially
over the years. She is also referring to whatever material the director’s team
has sent across to me. Her parents have known their family for many years. Deepika
intends to connect and spend some time with her before starting acting in the film
to be able to understand her perspective better. When asked if she’ll sport Romi’s
trademark cropped hair, Deepika teased that her fans would have to wait and
watch.
Ranveer said portraying Kapil on
screen is very difficult. It’s very challenging. He has a very distinct manner
of speaking, besides a very unique and difficult bowling action. Everyone –
from Balwinder Sandhu [ex-cricketer], Kapil to all the current and former cricketers
that he has interacted with – has given a thumbs-up to his batting technique. But
the characterisation is difficult. In terms of look, the two have spent –
accumulatively – close to 100 plus hours. Kabir wants to make sure that it
doesn’t look caricaturish, or mimicry of the [real] players. He wants them to
be convincing. Hence Ranveer has tried to imbibe all the distinctive traits of
Kapil Dev. But he would like people to see a bit of him in the role as well.
Thus Ranveer Singh will be playing
Kapil Dev, while others such as Ammy Virk, Saqib Saleem, Pankaj Tripathi,
Harrdy Sandhu have been roped in to play other team members. This will be the
first time that the real life married couple will share screen space.
’83 is being touted to be one of
the biggest sports movies of all times and has got the fans anticipating its
release ever since the film was first announced. The cast finished shooting in
Dharamshala and is now in London, shooting for the movie under the mentorship
of Kapil Dev, himself. Before the whole team flew out to London, all were seen
dressed up wearing the Indian Cricket Team Insignia. Ranveer Singh took to
social media to share a picture of the whole team and captioned it, “Kapil’s
Devils”.
Thus Ranveer Singh starrer, ’83 is
set to release on 10th April, 2020 and is going to be the first tri-lingual
release for both, Kabir Khan and Ranveer Singh, to release in Hindi, Tamil, and
Telugu.
The film, '83 will recreate the
historic events, which led the Indian cricket team to win the 1983 world cup
against West Indies.
Thus Ranveer, along with the other
mail cast, who play different members of the Kapil’s Devils of 1983, have
worked hard to study and emulate the iconic cricketers. The actors have spent
quality time with the cricketers both on and off the field to understand finer
points of the game and characteristics of the real heroes for portraying them
on screen.
Like Ranveer, who practiced with
cricketer Kapil Dev and spent 10 days at his house in Delhi to get into the
skin of the character, Deepika too will be too seen spending some time with
Romi Bhatia to understand her point of view since she knows very little about
her. Deepika’s family has been friends with the Dev’s for years because of her
father Prakash Padukone, former Indian badminton player, who is also one of the
renowned faces of the sports fraternity.
In recent reports, Deepika Padukone
revealed that she has a lot of material on Romi Bhatia and hence it is easy for
her to do research for the forthcoming film. While the film will be completely
focusing on the 1983 World Cup, the role of Deepika will be a small but crucial
one for the film.
Thus the cricket drama is slated to
release on April 10, 2020.
