Too many
illegal structures in Navi Mumbai
By Dinesh Kamath
NAVI MUMBAI: The City and Industrial Development Corporation of
Maharashtra Limited (CIDCO) recently served a notice to a five-storey building at
Koparkhairne. The developer of the building obliged CIDCO by starting to
demolish the structure.
The
complaint against that building lodged by the residents of Bonkode in
Koparkhairne led the CIDCO to issue the notice. In fact these residents were
complaining since last two years. They called the building as dangerous and
unauthorized. The developer learnt the lesson only after Mumbra collapse and
chose to voluntarily demolish the structure. The developers chose to do the
demolition themselves because they were aware of the fact that the building was
of sub-standard quality like the structure that collapsed at Mumbra and also one
of the builders was related to an accused in the Mumbra crash.
The
demolition has not yet been completed and hence CIDCO is being pressurized to
carry out the demolition and complete it rather than let the developers do it
since they were going at a very slow pace and there could come a stage where
they might stall the demolition process.
Just
recently CIDCO was conducting a demolition in Talavali village in Ghansoli, but
it had to stop due to protests by villagers.
CIDCO
authorities had conducted a survey to find out as to how many illegal
structures existed in Navi Mumbai. The result was shocking. The authorities
immediately warned the home buyers to not buy illegal property or reside in
them.
According
to the survey, Ghansoli had 2664 illegal structures, Airoli – 737, Koparkhairane
– 347, Nerul – 220, Sanpada – 103, Vashi – 93 and Belapur – 46.
