Activists oppose
construction of garden on Nerul hillock
By Dinesh Kamath
NAVI MUMBAI: Nerul
hillock in Sector 19 was once upon a time full of greenery. But the development
works that were carried out there by the city authorities led to this hill becoming
devoid of enough greenery. This angered the environmental activists to a great
extent. Now Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation has decided to construct a garden
on the hillock. The activists then used the Right To Information Act to derive
from NMMC the information as to how many trees are now existing on the hillock
and how many more will be planted during the construction of the garden. But
NMMC could not come up with a satisfactory reply.
The activists are now displaying their opposition to
constructing of a garden on Nerul hillock. According to them further
development work, if undertaken on this hillock, will destroy whatever little
greenery that is currently left on the hillock. These activists feel bitter
about the fact that NMMC chose to carry out development works on this hillock
by compromising the greenery of the hillock.
Thus the verbal exchanges between the environmental
activists and NMMC authorities over the subject of constructing a garden on
Nerul hillock is still going on and it is left to be seen what the conclusion
of these exchanges ultimately will be.
