Activists find replanted
trees dying in big number, blame NMMC
By Dinesh Kamath
NAVI MUMBAI: Navi
Mumbai Municipal Corporation had uprooted many trees for development purposes.
These uprooted trees were replanted by NMMC to avoid the fury of environment
activists. But the activists are provoked by the fact that all the replanted
trees are found to be dying. Such replanted trees which are in pitiable
conditions are found in Belapur, Ghansoli, Nerul, Turbhe etc. Are these trees
dying because of inability of civic body to maintain them properly?
When the civic officials were questioned about this, they
claimed to have been carrying out surveys of the replanted trees and taking all
the necessary care to see that they remain in normal condition. They said that
they even give chemical treatment to these trees to ensure their survival.
But both the activists and the local residents claim that
most of the trees replanted by NMMC are dying. The question is whether the
contractors assigned by the civic body to take care of these trees are playing
mischief?
