Indian Medical Association trains 75 doctors in Thane on
the urgent need to raise awareness about Vitamin D deficiency under its Rise
& Shine campaign which stress on how over 80 percent of India's population
and 65% men and women in Mumbai and Thane are vitamin D deficient and are at
risk of health complications like diabetes and heart disorders.
The Indian Medical Association organised a CME at Thane
to discuss the various health threats faced by the Indian population due to
Vitamin D deficiency. What is most commonly known as a hidden ailment, Vitamin
D deficiency can have a serious long-term impact on a person’s health making
them vulnerable to diseases such as heart attacks, diabetes and cancer. The CME
was an initiative under IMA’s new Rise and Shine campaign and was attended by
over 75 leading doctors in the city.
The IMA Rise and
Shine campaign is a National movement initiated by the Indian Medical
Association under an unconditional educational grant from leading
pharmaceutical company USV. It is aimed at sensitizing its 2.5 lakh members
across 30 states and 1700 branches over the next two years about the need to
raise awareness of Vitamin D deficiency. The campaign also aims to provide
essential soft skills training to all doctors on topics such as public
speaking, managing patient records online, adapting to the new mobile app
culture, how to break the news of death to a patient's family.
In a joint statement Dr. A Marthanda Pillai – National
President and Dr. KK Aggarwal – Honorary Secretary General of the Indian
Medical Association said, “There is abundance of sunshine in the country, but
still around 80% to 90% of people from all walks of life suffer from Vitamin D
deficiency. For the next two years, the IMA Rise & Shine campaign will
raise awareness about Vitamin D deficiency and address the skill gap that
exists in the healthcare sector. A serious concern for the medical fraternity
is that most people in our country are unaware that they are Vitamin D
deficient. The onus lies on the doctors to detect deficiency if patients
complain of tiredness, pains or vague aches to help avoid fatal diseases in the
long term. In most of the cases, supplementation needs to be recommended.
However, it is important to note that this must happen under medical
supervision for an overdose can induce Vitamin D toxicity which can be fatal
for patients.”
Dr. Ambrish Mittal, Chairman, Metabolic Disorders &
Endocrinology, Medanta – The Medicity and Dr. T.C. Rathod, State President IMA
Maharashtra branch said, "Vitamin D deficiency is rapidly gaining an
epidemic status, yet it is the most under-diagnosed and under-treated
nutritional deficiency in India and the World. Vitamin D, which can be
synthesized in the body by sun exposure, is essential to maintain calcium
homeostasis in the body for good bone health and for overall disease
prevention. Supplementation is required when adequate levels are not met from
natural sources. We must raise awareness
about this and we must do it now. For we are at a higher risk than ever before."
Addressing the doctors present at the CME, Dr Kanchan
Kewalramani, Consultant Endocrinologist and Diabetologist and Dr. Sudhindra
Kulkarni, Consultant Endocrinologist, Fortis Hospitals, Mumbai in a joint
statement said, "A multitude of studies from across the globe and India
have demonstrated the widespread prevalence of Vitamin D deficiency with South
Asia being one of the worst affected regions. It is equally common in both
males and females affecting people across all age groups - neonates, infants,
children, adolescents, adults and the elderly. In Mumbai and Thane itself over
65% of men and women suffer from Vitamin D deficiency. On a long term basis, we
need to have intervention in the form of a National policy for Vitamin D food
fortification which is already being practised in the U.S and some European
countries."
According to Dr. Avinash Wangle President IMA Thane
branch, “The last decade has seen an increased awareness of the critical role
played by Vitamin D in the maintenance of health, both skeletal and
extraskeletal benefits, as well as prevention of diseases. I am extremely happy
that the IMA National body along with USV Ltd. have taken up this initiative to
educate doctors and the public about this issue for early diagnosis and
treatment can help save numerous lives."
As per a recent study conducted by Dr Sudhindra Kulkarni
and his team at Fortis Hospital, it was found that around 95% of the 510
subjects evaluated were Vitamin D deficient. The subjects were given Vitamin D3
granules 60, 000 IU supplementation and there were remarkable improvements in
their 25 (OH) D levels.
The IMA Rise and Shine campaign in addition to conducting
CME’s and soft skill training workshops across 128 cities also comprises of a
National daily SMS campaign for doctors, awareness through an active Facebook
page, regular State and National Body meetings and public sensitization events.
