Dinesh Kamath's Editorial 'Congrats, ISRO!!!!' that was published in Newsband

Congrats, ISRO!!!!
India’s Mars Orbiter Mission has swept with effortless ease into orbit around the Red Planet, making this country the first to achieve such a feat in a maiden attempt. Thus far, only the United States, the former Soviet Union and the European Space Agency have succeeded in doing so. But they too did not achieve this feat in their maiden voyage. India and its space agency, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), now proudly join their ranks.
It is a tribute to ISRO and the professionalism of its scientists and engineers that every minute detail for such a complex mission could be attended to in the course of a project completed in just one and a half years. India’s Mars effort costs Rs.460 crore, an economical price tag by Western standards.
Our tireless scientists have been working for years to achieve this. The success of ISRO demonstrated that we are behind no one as far as brains and will power is concerned. The dedicated team of scientists, engineers, technologists and other staff deserve to be commended for this concurrent engineering feat. Electronics and communications, computing sciences, material sciences, structural engineering, electrical technologies, remote sensing and many other such disciplines have come together concurrently to make this possible along with the foresight, vision, planning, administration and management capabilities of a team of scientists and engineers. ISRO should also be looking at giving a thrust to civilian spin-offs from these technologies. It is also gratifying to see that many women and youngsters are at the fore-front of these projects. Organisations like DRDO, ISRO and CSIR should strive to raise the productive workforce from 30 to 40% now, by taking steps to institute the right work culture and strategies and educate the youngsters on such approaches. The results from such a galvanizing of human capital can be staggering!
For the most of the Indians who do not understand the science of space exploration - the engineering part and the mathematical part of guiding the craft - remains a matter of little interest, and perhaps rightly so. There is a sense of triumph and pride which the whole nation shares with the hundreds of scientists of the ISRO. ISRO’s success in the mission to the Red Planet is creditworthy and a justifiable reason for national pride and celebrations

With the success of Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM), a new chapter has been opened in India where a purely government organisation (ISRO) has worked with professionalism, competence of the highest level in scientific field and above all with the much requried economy. The ISRO stands out as the finest government organisation today and should inspire other government agencies to emulate ISRO's standards. Generally, Indians do not have a good opinion about anything involving our governments at any levels and accordingly they do not expect any quality work from the governments. But ISRO is definitely going to change that perception of average Indian not only in within the country but also outside, towards government organisations. Apart from its scientific value, ISRO is setting higher standards of work which is as much important as the MOM. This is the beginning of a new era in India's overall work culture and ISRO gets the lion's share.

Candidates for Assembly Election adopt varieties of tactics
By Dinesh Kamath

NAVI MUMBAI: Few days are left for the assembly election to take place and the candidates are become very impatient. They are trying all possible tricks to attract maximum voters by applying minimum efforts. They are focusing particularly on crowded areas so that they can convey their messages to maximum possible voters with just one visit to that place. The intensity of the election campaigns is increasing with the passing of every day and with the Election Day drawing closer and closer.
The candidates in the forthcoming election are leaving no stone unturned to reach out to the voters and they are using all kinds of methods, some of which were never used in the past elections. ‘Online propaganda’ is the new code word of the younger ones among the candidates. They are using all kinds of social networking sites like Whatsapp, Facebook, Blogs, Twitters etc. etc.
The older ones among the candidates prefer straight face-to-face interactions with the voters. The modern candidates mix up more with urban voters while the traditional ones prefer to exchange words with rural voters.
The candidates visit from one place to another, harping about their achievements and promising to bring about kind of developments which their rivals can never think about.
The local candidates prefer to invite the state-level leaders as well as national-level leaders to the city to give boost to their chances of winning the elections.

Thus these are the various tactics adopted by all the candidates to attract maximum voters towards their side.

Election Commission comes up with more polling booths for the city
By Dinesh Kamath

NAVI MUMBAI: The demand for places like Panvel, Uran, Airoli and Belapur is evident from the enormous rise of population in these four places making it necessary for the Election Commission to add considerably to the number of polling booths at these places. This rise in population is owing to people from neighbouring areas having migrated to these places in the recent times since they were attracted by the enormous scope that this city provides.
Out of the 86 polling booths that were added, Airoli got nine, Belapur-17, Panvel-35 and Uran-25.
The number of voters for the forthcoming Assembly polls was found to be much more than the voters who existed during last Lok Sabha polls. The political pundits are wondering as to what could be the reason for this tremendous rise in number of voters in such a short period. The rise is much more than a lakh which is really astounding.

However, with such a big number of new polling booths added, the voters will benefit a lot and will get the much-needed relief. The Election Commission had learnt from the experiences of the voters during the last Lok Sabha poll when the voters were found to be more and the polling booths were not adequate to do justice to all the voters. Hence, the Election Commission, to avoid the problems that arose during the Lok Sabha polls, did a brilliant job of adding considerably to the number of polling booths this time for the Assembly elections.

Dinesh Kamath's Editorial 'Maharashtra assembly election – a zig-saw puzzle' that was published in Newsband

Maharashtra assembly election – a zig-saw puzzle
Bharatiya Janata Party and Shiv Sena will fight the Assembly election in Maharashtra separately and so also the Nationalist Congress Party and Congress. This fact will throw the electoral contest to the Assembly wide open.
The 2014 Assembly election is now an opportunity for the parties to test their individual strengths. Realignments are likely soon after the election.
The question is whether the BJP is stronger than the Sena in Maharashtra? Will the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena replace the Sena as the BJP’s ally? Is a BJP-NCP alliance possible? Is the Congress at its lowest point in Maharashtra? In the long term, Maharashtra 2014 might be remembered for the answers to these questions.
Some political experts are of the view that there should be a law made to stop post poll alliance and the single largest party should be given the chance to govern the states irrespective of the numbers. Indian politics will perhaps get a new life.
The BJP-Shiv Sena alliance broke mainly due to lack of charismatic leaders for BJP and Uddhav Thackeray’s ambition to become the Chief Minister. The Shiv Sena is a party which came up by negative methods and dynastic politics - a trait hated by Modi and the BJP. Sena can display its power only in Maharashtra but at National level it has yet to show its mettle. Another thing is Uddhav Thackeray doesn’t seem to possess the kind of power his late father Bal Thackeray had displayed during his lifetime. All these factors will go against the Sena.
Congress-NCP alliance was already on the rock. With the mammoth corruption/scam by Ajit Pawar, Sharad Pawar and Praful Patel, it was just not possible for Congress to continue the alliance. Also, it is a fact that Shard Pawar has been systematically working to ruin Congress as a revenge for denial of Prime Minister’s post.
The total political scenario is wide open with two alliances breaking up for different reasons. All the four major parties are out to prove their point of view. We have to wait and see what would be poll verdict and who gains and who loses and who are going to align, it is a zig-saw puzzle.

It will be interesting to watch the post poll scenario - whether BJP would go for alliance with corrupt NCP who may be planning for an opportunity just to come back to hold power to save from probes against Ajit Pawar. Or will BJP prefer to again join hands with Shiv Sena?

Dinesh Kamath’s column ‘New movies that’ll get released in Navi Mumbai’ (Bang Bang!, Haider) that was published in Newsband

New movies that’ll get released in Navi Mumbai
By Dinesh Kamath
Bang Bang!

Bang Bang! is a Hindi action thriller film directed by Siddharth Anand and produced by Fox Star Studios. The film is an official remake of the Hollywood film Knight and Day and features Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaif in the lead roles performed by Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz respectively in the original. Fox Star Studios will distribute and market the film worldwide.
The movie has an interesting plot. A girl (Katrina Kaif) gets involved with a spy (Hrithik Roshan) trying to clear his name.
Bang Bang! is a high voltage film involving stunts, exotic international locales and music. It is an adaption of the Hollywood film Knight and Day. A chance encounter between the unassuming bank receptionist Harleen Sahni (Katrina Kaif) and the charming-yet-mysterious Rajveer Nanda (Hrithik Roshan) results in a barrage of broken down planes, car chases, shootouts, bombing raids and general global mayhem. A transcontinental chase ensues with Rajveer trying to convince Harleen that he’s the good guy but can she really trust him? And will trust matter when bullets start flying around? This film has edge-of-the-seat excitement and adrenaline pumping action as the duo fights against all odds. There are explosions, trigger happy assassins and pandemonium that can only aptly be termed as Bang Bang!
The film has Hrithik Roshan as Rajveer Nanda, Katrina Kaif as Harleen Sahni, Danny Denzongpa as Omar Zafar, Jaaved Jaffrey as Hamid Gul, Pawan Malhotra as Zorawar, Parth Akerkar as Robert, Kishan Gohel as Parker and Préity Üupala as Bar Dancer.
The songs of the film are composed by Vishal-Shekhar; whilst the background score is composed by Salim-Sulaiman.
The film has songs like Tu Meri, Meherbaan, Uff, Bang Bang and Meherbaan (Reprise version).

Haider

Haider is a 2014 Indian drama film directed by Vishal Bhardwaj, and co-written by Basharat Peer and Bhardwaj. It is a modern-day adaptation of William Shakespeare's Hamlet, set in Kashmir. The film stars Shahid Kapoor as Haider, and Tabu essays the role of his mother who marries her brother-in-law (played by Kay Kay Menon) after her husband mysteriously disappears. The film also stars Shraddha Kapoor as Arshia, a journalist by profession and Haider's love-interest.
Vishal Bhardwaj’s Haider is set in Srinagar during the ’90s. Shahid Kapoor plays Haider who returns to his hometown, Kashmir after he receives the news that his father, Roohdaar (Irrfan Khan), has gone missing. Tabu plays the role of Haider’s mother, Ghazala. Irrfan Khan (Roohdar) plays a doctor who provides shelter to injured militants in his own house. Soon the house is blown up, and Haider’s father goes missing. After returning to Kashmir, Haider realises that the security forces have abducted his father for shielding militants. He also comes to know that his mother has married his Chacha (Kay Kay Menon) after his father goes missing. Haider soon learns that his father is no more and intense drama follows as the mother and son come to terms with this. Following this, Haider comes to know the person responsible for his father’s death. What will Haider do now? Well, you have to watch the film to find it out.
Thus the film has Shahid Kapoor as Haider, Tabu as Ghazala, Haider's mother, Irrfan Khan as Roohdar, Haider's father, Kay Kay Menon as         Khurram, Haider's uncle, Shraddha Kapoor as Arshia, Narendra Jha, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Lalit Parimoo, Ashish Vidyarthi, Aamir Bashir, Sumit Kaul and Rajat Bhagat.
The original songs and score of the film are composed by Vishal Bharadwaj. All lyrics are written by Gulzar, except the tracks Gulon Mein Rang Bhare and Aaj Ke Naam which were penned by Pakistani poet Faiz Ahmed Faiz.

The film has songs like Aao Na sung by Vishal Dadlani, Bismil by Sukhwinder Singh, Khul Kabhi by Arijit Singh, Gulon Mein Rang Bhare by Arijit Singh, Ek Aur Bismil by Sukhwinder Singh, Jhelum by Vishal Bhardwaj, So Jao by Alaap Majgavkar, Sourabh Joshi, Mayukh Sarkar, Muzamil Bhawani, Bashir Bhawani, Bashir Lone, Do Jahaan by Suresh Wadkar, Shraddha Kapoor and Aaj Ke Naam by Rekha Bhardwaj.
