Dinesh Kamath's Editorial 'India should produce globally competent advocates' that was published in Newsband

India should produce globally competent advocates
The government’s proposal to open up the legal services sector to foreign participation in a limited way is not a bad idea. But we should also promote our own domestic lawyers in India. We should revamp our existing legal studies, so that our own legal sector can flourish.
Before inviting foreign lawyers into our country our legal education must be reformed thoroughly. Majority of the advocates are ignorant of cyber laws and how to use the computers or social media or social media marketing. Syllabus for LL.B or LL.M. must be of global standards. We should have adequate teachers or faculty to teach latest law subjects. Once a law student completes Law course and enters into legal profession, again he/she has to work under a senior. Dist. level Advocates are not aware of how to practice before HC or SC. Advocates who directly commence practice before HC may not be aware of Trial Court practice. To bring out the best within Advocates, the entire legal education, legal profession have to be reformed. Central Government should form a committee to study problems being faced by advocates. Our advocates need social and economic security also. We need to produce globally competent and talented advocates.
It is a good sign that our government is allowing Legal sector to foreign participation in a limited way. We have excellent Lawyers who are well versed in Indian laws. If we allow foreign participation in a reciprocal way our legal professionals should also be accepted by the foreign countries, but is it possible? Every country has their own law suiting their own constitution and hence it will be very difficult for our Lawyers to compete with others internationally unless they are taught at our institutions.

Legal professionalism in India is getting degenerated day by day and this opening up may force the legal profession in India to gain power to combat with the expertise outsiders may bring in here. It is a welcome step by all means.
