Dinesh Kamath's Editorial 'Need for overhaul in education system' that was published in Newsband

Need for overhaul in education system
In India, we should do away with each states having their own Educational Boards. All the State boards should be merged. The syllabus should be uniform. Also, the pupils should be tested in a uniform manner.
One argument that could be placed against this uniform tests all over the country is that, pupils of different states could not be pitted against each other due to the different levels of education in each state. Also, a point can be made that rural students cannot compete with urban students. It is the duty of the Indian government and the respective state governments to provide quality education to all the students of the country. They cannot forever hide behind this excuse. Schools, teachers, stationery, playground etc that is available to a city kid should be available to a village kid too, so that they have the tools to compete with each other.
When adequate teachers and sufficient trading equipment is scarce, the conducting of exams or non-conducting of board exams makes very little difference to the overall education system. The students must be provided with all the required amenities including lab facilities to attain a stage where he can appear for exams confidently. Just examining the secondary students and allotting marks may not evaluate the standard and capabilities of the students. For long, there have been demands for an overhaul in education system which remain a mirage even now
Education as the basic foundation and infrastructure for raising a vibrant asset consisting of well-rounded educated men and women capable of handling the various vocations, professions etc. has become the play thing of all and sundry. It is another over politicised area leaving room for exploiters especially those in the corridors of power to make education a money spinner more than catering to satisfy the national requirements. Are they opening factories churning out unemployable material though their titles are high sounding. No one has thought of gearing or orienting the educational system to meet the needs of the country. It is high time that the educational system changes in the country. Education must be restored to its pedestal and made to serve the long term growth of the country rather than lining the pockets of designing groups and politicians.
If you look at the abysmal condition of the schools (especially the government one) you would not even think of the lofty ideas to implement CCE there. The concept of CCE is excellent but only in good schools where teachers are committed and devoted to and at the same time trained for this assessment. Implementing CCE system in the former type of schools is just like forcing "A healthy and balanced diet plan" to a starving man. The CCE system is undoubtedly marvelous thing but the basic things should be done first.

At this juncture of having students with opportunities to learn more through digital resources in myriad ways, tracking them for a tailor made syllabus with compulsion is unwarranted and it will not bring out the creativity of the students. Making the X board exam compulsory from 2018 may give administrative convenience but not better opportunities for continuous learning and evaluation. When the pedagogues run a stable curriculum with retrograde, students’ creativity will be blocked and they will miss dynamic education. There is need to keep up the dynamism in bringing the creativity of students.
