Trump changes his attitude towards China
President Donald Trump’s administration appears to be soft towards Beijing. Earlier, Trump had given enough indications that he would pursue a
radically different policy towards Beijing. But now Trump took a 180-degree
turn on China in his first telephone conversation with Chinese President Xi
Jinping. It is not clear what made Trump change his mind. HIs administration has taken clear measures
to ease tensions with Beijing,
Trump has decided not to upset the Chinese apple cart. But
why show incongruity and double standards when it comes to similar situations
elsewhere. The constant refrain and advice to India is that we should
'accommodate' Pakistan as a larger neighbour, show generosity and 'accept' the
existing LoC in order to achieve peace even though the Maharajah of J&K, in
exercise of the absolute powers vested in him and in accordance with the India
Independence Act, 1947, decided to accede to India and that too after deciding
to stand equidistant from both India & Pakistan initially. It was
Pakistan's action of letting loose jihadi rapists, plunderers and looters
backed up by its Army that led to the Maharajah acceding to us.
It seems that Trump took some time to realize the actual 'power'
of China and its growing influence in the World. Hence, he had to revert his
earlier decision of neglecting Chinese leadership. He seems to be careful in
his diplomatic relationship with powerful nations like Russia and China.
This major step of US to deepen the relations with China
considering its one China policy could be an important issue for India only if
both the economies are making efforts for India to become a Global Economy.
Earlier Trump struck against One China policy which irritated
and perplexed China and vehemently opposed Trump for his moves against One
China policy. Trump announced to review relations with China and stop imports
from China. But it is not known as to what exactly happened and Trump
interacted with Jin ping and accepted the one China policy. Now China heaves a
sigh of relief. Yet Trump cannot be taken into account for this stand to
continue and his rudimentary hate for China is there and we don't know when he
will take the U turn.
Now China is busy with CPEC project which may increase Asian
connectivity. But it is also a step to get access into Arabian Ocean area since
already a port is being constructed in Sri Lanka. We’ll have to wait and see as
to how long Trump will continue to woo China.
