Dinesh Kamath's Editorial 'Reservations for women' that was published in Newsband

Reservations for women
The implementation of reservation of seats in local body elections for women, to the order of 33% or more, was not accepted in right spirit in Nagaland in spite of the fact that in rural areas the quota has helped improve local governance.
The Nagaland government declared the elections as “null and void” after some tribal bodies opposed the reservations for women. The conduct of the long-delayed elections was achieved after a protracted legal struggle led by women’s groups.
In Nagaland judiciary has played its important role in resolving this problem but still Centre and State Governments are behaving as silent spectator by not taking appropriate action against the bandhs and riots caused by Naga tribal groups.

Nagaland is witnessing one of the crucial struggles. Women are asserting themselves by demanding implementation of reservation they are rightfully entitled to. It's time the tribal council of Nagaland realized that women rule the household and it is only befitting to give them equal representation in the larger society as well, especially with regards to seat reservations in decision making bodies.
