Dinesh Kamath about Deepika Padukone

Deepika Padukone has a slew of big films lined up this year. Taking a superb head start, her first release of the year, Race 2 has hit 100 crore at the Box Office. Deepika Padukone's recent release Race 2 has managed to cross the 100 crore mark and is yet running steady at the Box Office. This marks the first 100 crore for Deepika! However, Deepika is not fascinated by the 100 crore tag. The leggy lass has received many umpteenth praises for her look and performance in her film. The year 2013 has started on a high note for Deepika and it looks very promising ahead. She has an interesting mix of films lined up. After Race 2, she now has Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani, Chennai Express, Ram Leela and Kochadaiyaan in the pipeline.
Deepika has never understood why people believe that one needs to do a de-glam role to win an award. Does it mean that glamorous roles don't require acting? Love Aaj Kal was not a glamorous role; it was a girl-next-door role. So was Break Ke Baad. In fact, the most glamorous role that Deepika has done is the one in Om Shanti Om, because she played a heroine from the '60s and '70s.
It's been five years since Om Shanti Om released and Deepika feels like every day has been a learning experience. In fact, she believes life itself is a learning experience - you gain some, you lose some, but every day there are new challenges.
According to her, the beauty of being an actor is you get to live this life where you get to be so many different people.
The 27-year-old says that men in Bollywood get all the credit for making "100-crore" hits.
Her film Ram Leela has had its release date pushed back after it clashed with Chennai Express.
According to a college poll, Deepika is the most stylish actress today. It has got to do with Cocktail. The styling, the hair, the make up — everything about the character (Veronica) was appreciated. If people appreciate Deepika’s sense of style, it’s not her doing. It’s Anaita Shroff Adajania’s (stylist) doing. She’s the person who’s put her character together. So it’s her victory, not Deepika’s. Deepika does have a sense of style.
In fact, she has a strong sense of like and dislike. And Anaita works around that. So whether she’s styling Deepika for a film or for her appearances, she works around Deepika’s likes. She never imposes anything on Deepika.
In a career spanning half a decade and 15 odd films, surprisingly Deepika Padukone hasn't really done a full fledged comedy film. Now she is getting much more than what she would have bargained for in Chennai Express where she has experienced the Rohit Shetty brand of comedy that is as relentless as it gets.
With Shah Rukh Khan anyway managing to keep her in splits with his charm, it has turned out to be a double whammy for her.
Deepika has been a part of many urban rom-com affairs or some dramatic films but comedy isn't something that she has indulged in. Yes, there was a Housefull but the multi-starrer didn't carry as much scope for her to stretch her comic act to the fullest. No wonder, when she stepped into the mad world of Chennai Express, it was an altogether new challenge awaiting her. She had to be on her toes, literally, for each and every scene since Rohit is a master when it comes to putting together comic scenes while Shah Rukh Khan comes with ton loads of experience. Add to that the fact that she is playing a typical Tamilian girl and matters became further tough for her as she could neither overdo nor underplay the part.
Yes, Chennai Express has been a completely new world for Deepika; not just in terms of the genre but also in terms of the character she is playing. She has come to realize that comedy is a very different and difficult genre to do. Moreover there was no shielding for her either since this is not like another multistarrer by Rohit where you can afford to take your place in a corner. In the film it is just Shah Rukh and Deepika which means the responsibility to deliver is all the more. In Chennai Express, Deepika and Shahrukh have gone all out in bringing on the laughter.
Good Luck, Deepika!
