Dinesh Kamath's column on film 'Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Returns' that was published in Newsband

Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Returns is a 2013 Bollywood romantic thriller drama film directed by Tigmanshu Dhulia. It is the sequel to the 2011 film, Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster. The film stars Jimmy Shergill and Mahie Gill, who will all be seen reprising their roles from the previous film, while new additions to the cast include Irrfan Khan and Soha Ali Khan. The film has music by Sandeep Chowta, cinematography by Yogesh Jani and editing done by Rahul Srivastava. The film will release on March 8, 2013.
The film has Jimmy Shergill as Aditya Partap Singh, Mahie Gill as Madhavi, Irrfan Khan as Indrajeet Singh aka Raja Bhaiyya, Soha Ali Khan as Raja Bhaiyya's wife, Pravesh Rana, Deepraj Rana, Raj Babbar and Mugdha Godse in an item number.
The sequel was announced following the huge critical success of the first part, Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster. Jimmy Shergill and Mahie Gill are seen reprising their roles. Irrfan Khan will be seen playing royalty who has lost everything and is now out to kill Saheb. Soha Ali Khan plays Irrfan Khan's oppressed and abused wife. Raj Babbar plays the role of Soha Ali Khan's father. Mugdha Godse plays an item number.
Filming began in April 2012 in Gujarat and was wrapped up in October 2012.The film is made at a budget of Rs 7 crore.
Sahib Biwi aur Gangster Returns starts from where the last film ended. It is assuring to see Jimmy Sheirgill and Mahie Gill reprise the roles of Saheb and Biwi respectively. Especially because in the age of cashing in on brand recall, there is one film that is at least taking the story forward with its original cast.
The film introduces us to the three main characters outlining their needs and motives. First comes a wheel chair bound, Jimmy Sheirgill, with his legs lost but his sense of possession intact, then there is a perennially inebriated Mahie Gill grieving the lack of love in her life in her drunken splendor and finally there is Irrfan Khan, determined to settle an old score with his arch enemy. Throw in Raj Babbar and Soha Ali Khan in the mix and you’re left wondering where each character’s loyalty lies.
The actors, their dialogues and the background music will leave their mark on you. The look and feel of the movie seems to be a little dated, but overall, it looks like a dark romantic thriller. With director Tigmanshu Dhulia looking to raise the bar with every new project, Sahib, Biwi aur Gangster Returns looks like an exciting prospect, though for a limited audience.
Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster was sensuous film and had a lot of intimacy. However, this time the director insists that in the sequel of the film Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Returns there is less sensuality.
Not that there is no sensuality at all in the film. There is enough sensuality. The film does have intimate scenes but in little measures. It is effective only like that. The film has right amount of passion and sex.
The film is set in north India. Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Returns moves ahead with its story of four central characters, played by Jimmy Shergill, Mahie Gill, Irrfan Khan and Soha Ali Khan. The makers of the sequel have gone all out to ensure that the film exudes a royal vibe.
The film is set against the backdrop of politics among the royal families. So the idea is to recreate the splendour and magnificence of Indian royalty.
A series of vintage cars have been specially sourced to bring the lead star cast into a venue reminiscent of a palace. It will be an experience to behold.
Some of these vintage cars include the ’60s models of makes such as Buick, Avon, Ford, Chrysler and Cadillac. There are only a handful of dealers for such vintage cars. The makers handpicked these particular cars from them. A few of them were brought from Jaipur for the event.
The Tigmanshu Dhulia film is set in north India and revolves around a begum, her nawab and an ambitious young man.
The film thrives on an intelligent plot and not on overt sexuality. Tigmanshu Dhulia had earlier given us some wonderful films like Haasil, Sahib Biwi Aur Gangster and Paan Singh Tomar. All his productions were critically well received.
The first edition of the movie was in the news both for its intelligent screenplay as well as the sensuality portrayed in it. You might find the sequel equally hot. Sensuality in this movie too is never forced. Even in this film you will see that the steamy scenes go with the narrative. In fact, they are an integral part of the plot that is intelligent and intriguing. In that sense Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Returns is sexy but not sexual.
Mahie Gill plays an aiyaash (floozy) bahu in the film and she is known for her wilderness. She is not an aiyaash in real life so she was more than happy to be one at least for the film.
Blue blood helped Soha Ali Khan bag Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster. Soha Ali Khan, born to Sharmila Tagore and Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, began her career in Bollywood with Dil Maange More in 2004. Family lineage usually helps one get a break in Bollywood, but it was actor Soha Ali Khan's royal ancestry that won her a role in Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Returns. Soha plays Irrfan's wife in the film, and most of the characters have a royal connection. She fits the bill perfectly. She has a persona which reflects her family lineage. Her royal ancestry was undoubtedly one of the reasons why she got this role to play.
Thus Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster Returns revolves around the survival of a royal family in post-independent India. Jimmy Shergill as an uptight zamindar, Soha Ali Khan as the choti bahu, Irrfan as a gangster and Mahie Gill as a sexy seductress – all these actors have done great job.
This film has classic era or aura reinvented. Tigmanshu Dhulia takes modern, aggressive and bold move in recreating this aura. In age and rage for experimentation, this Tigmanshu Dhulia directed flick promises a hot-headed triangle love story rather than being a 'musical classic' and is in news for its bold scenes and highly publicized Jugni number.
The musical album has an interesting outlook with an array of promising composers (Amit Sial, Sunil Bhatia, Jaidev Kumar, Anuj Garg, Abhishek Ray, Ankit Tiwari and Mukhtar Sahota), delivering out the needful for the flick.
The film has songs like Jugni sung by Babbu Mann, Main Ek Bhanwara by Shail Hada, I love to love you by Rekha Bharadwaj, Chu Chu by Parthiv Gohil and Debojit Saha, Raat Mujhe by Shreya Ghoshal, Saheb Bada Hatela by Vipin Aneja and Ankit Tiwari and Ankhiya by Arif Lohar. Thus Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Returns comes out to be mixed bag of affairs with couple of interesting and impressive soundtracks. Its strongest musical feature is Jaidev Kumar's composed Jugni while situational numbers like Saheb bada hatela and Ankhiyan impresses with their quality works.
Thus, you must watch Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster Returns for both its story and music when it gets released on 8 March 2013.
