Koparkhairane dumping yard beautification
By Dinesh Kamath
KOPERKHAIRANE: The phase two of developing the dumping ground in sector 14, Koperkhairane, is pending because nobody was willing to accept the tender. Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) thus had no other alternative but to decide to retender the proposal.
This particular place was once upon a time a hell of a spot. It was stinking and not worth visiting. But the NMMC had done a splendid job by converting it into a green expanse. This the corporation did by utilizing the latest scientific and technological methods. Now only a small space in that particular region needs to be made green. This will be done in the phase two of the project. Once this project work is finished then the entire dumping ground will get an absolutely green look and can then be considered as a green zone. This will then be another feather in the cap of NMMC.
This particular spot is visited by a large number of people because it consists of joggers’ park. It is the greenery that attracts them to this place. This dumping yard initially belonged to CIDCO. In 2004, CIDCO handed over this place to NMMC. NMMC did not take time to transform this place into paradise since it has many sophisticated and scientific equipments at its disposal. This is the reason why many people are of the opinion that CIDCO should hand over to NMMC still more similar spots existing in Navi Mumbai since NMMC is indeed capable of doing yeomen work on such spots.
No more is the developed part of the dumping yard in Koperkhairane used to dump debris or throw garbage, thanks to NMMC.
There are some other dumping yards in Navi Mumbai. Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) is always keeping an eye on such spots since it poses severe health problems to those residing around it. These places need to be scientifically developed by NMMC. The dumping land could be used to one’s advantage by digging there by avoiding soil pollution and collecting and storing the gases emitted from garbage in an underground storage tank.
The part of the dumping yard in Koperkhairane that is left to be beautified will be tackled in the phase two. NMMC has plans to plant flowering saplings and grass, install irrigation system and develop jogging track at this spot. Huge funds have been sanctioned by the NMMC authorities to repair the lights and improve the garden and hence the phase two also shows promise of becoming a big success like the phase one. This will give additional boost to the image of NMMC.
