MUMBAI: The suspect
arrested by the police in connection with Sandhya murder case on Friday,
Mohammed Mehendi Hassan Ansari, was in Uttar Pradesh when the victim went
missing in December.
Earlier Hassan was arrested by the
police who believed he was in Nerul, Navi Mumbai, between December 10 and 16.
Sandhya Singh went missing on December 13 and her remains were spotted by
British birdwatchers off Palm
Beach Road in January.
Throughout his interrogation, Hassan kept
on saying that he had gone to Bijnaur, his hometown in UP, with his wife in the
first week of December and returned only in the new year. The police confirmed
his statement from his cellphone operator that he was in UP in December.
Hassan’s wife too defended him, saying that the two had gone to UP on a
reserved train ticket.
Hassan, while being interrogated,
confessed to some minor crimes he had committed in Navi Mumbai but he just
refused to admit that he was involved in Sandhya Singh’s murder in any way. The
reason for his fleeing to UP was he didn’t want to be arrested by police for
the minor crimes that he had committed.
Hassan will be handed over to the Turbhe
and the Chembur police stations as he is wanted in offences there.
A top police official said that they are
still hopeful of getting a lead into Sandhya murder case from Hassan and hence
he has not yet been given a clean chit. The mystery into this murder case is
still deepening more and more.
