Navi Mumbai commuters had to face tough time on Sunday
By Dinesh Kamath
NAVI MUMBAI: The Harbour line services between Mankhurd and Nerul got badly affected and were stopped on Sunday from 11am for around four hours. Commuters had no choice other than travel by other routes or by road.
Auto drivers had a gala time during this period by charging higher fares. However, BEST was kind enough to release extra bus services to Navi Mumbai.
Central Railway too showed concern for commuters’ problems and they ran special trains on the CST-Mankhurd and Panvel-Thane sections during this crisis period. Harbour line passengers for Panvel/Belapur/Vashi were allowed to travel via the Trans-harbour line/Main line during the block.
Suburban locals were also affected owing to this block and they ran 15 minutes behind the schedule. Commuters were seen packed in the trains. These trains are crowded during normal times too. But during this crisis period they were overcrowded. Some passengers were seen hanging out of the running trains and this appeared very risky. The railway announcers were heard requesting the crowd not to take any risk.
The megablock between Matunga and Mulund added to the problem. The railways tried to help the commuters to a certain extent by making the fast trains halt at  Mulund, Bhandup, Vikhroli and other important stations during the block period.
The Western Railway posed no problem to commuters. There it was normal as usual although a day before the block a jumbo block was carried out between Vasai Road and Bhayander for maintenance of tracks, signalling and overhead equipment.
