Amnesty International comes up
with a good idea
Amnesty International seeks concrete commitments from prime
ministerial hopefuls in the elections to the 16th Lok Sabha on almost every
rights violation that has shaken the citizens’ conscience. The legal prohibition
of torture, abolition of the death penalty, decriminalisation of homosexuality,
punishment for marital rape and a law for migrant labour, figure in the 16-item
questionnaire, seeking a pointed yes or no answer from parties and prominent
leaders. The answers to these
questions will determine the current position of Indian democracy.
Amnesty expects the organised political forces to respect
the constitutional values of justice, freedom, equality and human dignity. This
is a very good initiative by Amnesty international to probe into the views of
the prime-ministerial candidates on critical key issues. This will help the
voters to know more about the mentality of the candidates. If the answers to
these questions are made available to the public before the election then they
can take intelligent decision in voting.
Amnesty International has an unblemished track
record and is known for its relentless fight to uphold the values of justice,
freedom, equality and human rights. Its idea of seeking answers to questions
relating to sensitive issues should be appreciated by one and all. The Prime
Ministerial candidates will have to answer these questions if they wish to
create good impression among the voters.
Another thing is that instead of just talking about
broad subjects like empowerment, anti-corruption, development in the manifesto,
the political parties should give their concrete view on the issues raised by
the people. This will represent the true democratic spirit among the political
parties.
