Gavaskar is the right man chosen
for the right job
The Supreme Court has appointed former Indian
cricket captain Sunil Gavaskar as interim head of the Board of Control for
Cricket in India to manage the affairs of the Indian Premier League. With N.
Srinivasan gone,
the Board will be managed by two former
Test cricketers — Shivlal Yadav, who will discharge the BCCI president’s
functions, and Sunil Gavaskar, whose role will be limited to IPL operations
this year. Hopefully, the tenure of Yadav
and Gavaskar, however brief, will be an opportunity to clean up the BCCI’s
affairs.
The ace batsman has got off the mark with a touch of
credibility. To meet the challenges ahead, he needs to bring to his latest role
the qualities he had displayed on the field. There is no doubt that a huge
responsibility is placed over Sunil Gavaskar's head. He must probe into the entire
matter without the influence of others and take a fair and wise decision as
expected.
The Court should have appointed Arvind Kejriwal as
the BCCI President. This would have rattled the Government and the main
opposition.
Gavaskar has a big task ahead. Facing Robert, Marshal,
Lillee, Thomson and other fast bowlers was an entirely different cup of tea and
one biggest advantage was that all of them bowled from the front and however
fast they bowled, great Sunny mastered to face them well.
But BCCI is a different issue altogether as many
balls will come from different directions. It would be interesting to see how Sunny
will bat now. The biggest advantage he will have is he has already made enough
name and fame and will give utmost importance to clean the system.
Betting in the game should be made legal as long as
they do not influence players. Cleansing should target only the elements who
are influencing the players. We need administrators with integrity and not
shoddy characters. So undoubtedly, Gavaskar is the right man chosen for the
right job.
