Boycotting the Parliament is
not solution to the problem
The constant boycott
of Parliament by the leading opposition party is not a good sign for a
democratic country.
The reason for the
last boycott was the issues that have precipitated its confrontation with the
government, besides holding up critical pieces of legislation such as that
relating to Goods and Services Tax.
Wash out of
Parliament proceedings reflects badly on the opposition parties blindly
stalling discussion of people's problems. Members of Parliament have a
responsibility to represent the interests of the electorate. A failure to do so
attracts people's ire. As a system of 'Recall" is not adopted in our
Constitution, necessary alternate mechanism to evaluate the performance of the
people's representatives in the elected bodies has to be established for rating
the members' capacity to serve people.
Majority of
parliamentarians appear to lack necessary knowledge or do homework for
participating in any debate. If one goes through proceedings of past few years,
one notices more rhetoric than substance - more noise than debate, dwelling on
the past than on the present. Bharatiya Janata Party blames Congress for the
same tactics it adopted earlier. If BJP continues to indulge in such kind of
blame games, there is a fear that it might ultimately deliver power to Congress
on platter in the next polls, though Congress lost credibility and is losing
presence in many states
No party or MP has
a right to stop functioning of People’s Parliament. They can protest outside by
resorting to hunger strike. Stopping functioning of Parliament is nothing but colossal
waste of precious time and money.
These MPs don’t
even care to debate. How many of these Parliamentarians can understand a
finance or any substantive bill? These are men and women with substantial money
and muscle power and clout within their political parties to win their seats.
So, honestly except for a select few, rest of the people's representatives will
do great service if they do not attend Parliament. Like in some companies,
Directors are appointed because of their ownership but do nothing to grow the
companies. These MPs are exactly that - just making up numbers. It is a curse
of this banana republic.
