Dinesh Kamath's Editorial (Duties of railway authorities) that was published in Newsband

Duties of railway authoritiesWhen Navi Mumbai stations were newly constructed commuters were impressed since not even a city like Mumbai had such posh railway stations. But what are the conditions of most of these railway stations today?
Certain people who lack civic sense are misusing them. Some people spit paan wherever they like thus making these stations look like spittoons. The railway authorities are not taking any step to check this menace. These authorities have forgotten that their first and foremost duty is to provide as many amenities as possible to the commuters. Navi Mumbai stations need to be cleaned from time to time. Also there should be adequate policemen posted at these stations to tackle untoward incidents that take place over there every now and then. There are long distance commuters who are in need of drinking water. The authorities should make water available for the benefit of such commuters. Toilets within the stations should be kept clean.
Another thing is it is not enough just to increase passenger fares and railway pass rates. Commuters should also get the benefit for having been made to pay more money for railway tickets and passes. Railways should also employ men to see to it that no person without ticket or pass enters the railway stations. The cases of people traveling by train without ticket or pass are in the increase and the railway authorities are just not able to stop this menace.
Beggars, street urchins, drug addicts, pick-pockets should not get entry into the railway station since they prove to be dangerous for commuters. Already the trains are crowded and on top of that the harassed commuters have to tackle such anti-social elements who create havoc inside the trains. Railway authorities should maintain order and cleanliness. They should take strict action against those who dirty platforms, trains, rakes and tracks. There should be enough inspecting officers posted at railway stations and within the trains to ensure that no damage is done to railway properties and also to ensure that commuters are not troubled in any way.
At some stations, it is found that wall tiles are missing in spite of the presence of security staff. Many stations don't have enough garbage bins and hence the commuters are forced to throw away waste and unwanted things on the platform or tracks. Also the level of platforms should be raised to the level of the trains to make it easy for senior citizens and students to board or alight from the train. There should be more ticket counters to solve the problems relating to long queues.
These railway stations have been constructed with the help of taxes paid by the public and so it is the duty of the railway authorities to see to it that they provide the public good service.
