Conditions set
by NBWL for clearance of NMIA
By Dinesh Kamath
NAVI MUMBAI: The National Board for Wildlife (NBWL) has set
conditions before giving clearance to the Navi Mumbai International Airport
(NMIA). The following are the conditions:
·
The aeroplanes
cannot fly over the adjacent Karnala Bird Sanctuary (KBS).
·
The take-offs and
landings of planes should not be located near the sanctuary.
·
In order to have
alternate sites for migratory birds visiting wetlands within the proposed
airport site, Sewri coast wetland should be considered to be developed.
·
The loss of
important mangrove forest on the site should be compensated; the mangrove
forest bordering the airport site, including the mangrove park, should be
declared a mangrove sanctuary. Also permission should be sought for replanting
mangroves from the Bombay High Court.
·
Cityand
Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) should pay three per cent of the
project cost for a fixed deposit with the wildlife departments so that the
interest amount can be spent on the conservation of mangroves in the entire
Mumbai wildlife circle.
Thus
these are the conditions laid down by NBWL
